One of the remaining cars follows us, while the second one goes after the Hummer Logan is driving.
“Hold on, Prince.”
Björn drives like a madman.
He’s going almost ninety miles per hour between trees and over uneven terrain.
Anyone else would crash in minutes, but he isn’t anyone else.
Luckily for us, the driver chasing us is.
In a turn, the driver loses control and crashes against a tree so hard that we don’t have to check for survivors.
“Target down,” Björn announces. “We’re clear.”
The car stabilizes and speeds down toward the highway, but Cillian is still spiraling.
He isn’t breathing right.
Below me, Cillian’s chest heaves violently, and his fingers dig into my pants.
“Hey! Look at me,” I say, keeping one arm locked around his back. “Cillian, look at me.”
“I can’t—I can’t breathe—” he chokes out, his eyes wide and filled with tears.
“Yes, you can, but you need to relax,” I say, but he doesn’t hear me.
Fuck, he’s in shock.
I pull him up, sit him on my lap, and kiss him.
“Oh, my Gods!—” Leif gasps.
Without taking his eyes off the road, Björn pushes his twin’s face back toward the windshield. “Eyes on the road, Leif.”
Cillian kisses me back.
He tries to deepen the kiss, but I don’t let him.
Instead, I press soft kisses against his lips, cheeks, and jaw. Slowly, gently, over and over until I feel his body relaxing into mine.
Once I feel his breathing changing, I pull back, resting my forehead against his.
“Better?” I ask, and he nods, looking both relaxed and shocked.
“You… you said we would only do this at the cabin,” he whispers, though I’m pretty sure the twins can hear everything.
“This was the only exception,” I say, keeping my hands on his cheeks. “Call it emergency medical intervention.”
“I thought Tae was the Harknett doctor,” he teases.
“Oh, trust me, my method was less painful.” I check his pulse and breathing; they’re back to normal. “How are you feeling?”
“Better…” Cillian looks down, as if he’s unsure about what he wants to say.
Is he scared?
He must be… We Harknetts get shot at every two days, so we’re more than used to it, but Cillian isn’t.
