I want to cry.

Ellis’ best friend, Maddox, is an incredible lawyer who has a waiting list. For him to agree to help us with Knox’s case… I don’t even know how to feel.

“Tell him I am incredibly grateful.”

Ellis looks past me toward Knox. “Are you ready to show him?”

And this is when the nerves hit me.

Am I ready?

Fuck… I am so scared he’ll hate it and leave…

But I feel like I have to do this.

“What if he hates it?” I ask Ellis, hoping he can’t tell how terrified I am. “What if I’m just opening old wounds?”

“You’re healing them,” he assures me. “It might hurt him, but it always does when you’re cleaning out a wound.”

I pull Ellis into a hug, feeling a tiny bit less anxious. “Thank you.”

And with the folders clutched in my hand, I walk over to the table where Knox is sitting.

“Babe… can we talk?” I ask, leaning in.

“Why are you this nervous, Prince? You’re starting to scare me.”

I place the envelopes on the table, my hands shaking a little.

Come on, Cil… You can do this.

You have to do this.

“I… I wanted to give you a thank-you gift for saving Leo, for saving me, and for bringing so much happiness into my life.” Knox opens his mouth to speak, probably to tell me he doesn’t want me spending money on him.

So I lift a hand to quiet him and force out a smile.

“But…” I continue, anxious as hell. “I know you hate my usual extravagant gifts made of gold. So I hope instead I can gift you and your family justice, retribution, and peace.”

“I don’t understand.”

I open the envelope and pull out the pages inside.

Knox instantly tenses the moment he sees the photograph of the man who killed his mother.

He looks up at me, and I can tell he’s confused and hurt.

Oh, boy…
