“Good. Maybe this will be the one.”
“I hope so. I can't take another Mrs. Patterson.”
“Girl, don't let that woman get in your head. You're qualified. If she wants to turn down help, that's her problem.”
I slid into the driver’s side and closed the door.
“It's still full time?”
“That's what they requested. There's a possibility of living there, too. You can talk about that at the interview.”
“Okay.”
“Same things we discussed. Personal care, meals, somebody patient who can drive. You've done all of it.”
“I know, boo.”
“I just don't want you going in there already expecting them to say no.”
“I’m not. I’m hoping they’ll say yes.”
“Good. Keep your head up.”
I had enough time to get there without rushing. My stomach had been bothering me again that morning, but I had managed to eat a little. I was tired of having to think about whether food was going to stay down every time I left the house.
I started the car and backed out.
A job was necessary. I needed something to do besides sit around thinking about Justice or wondering what Roman was doing to my son. I couldn't keep going back to that school without figuring out what I was going to do when I finally spoke to Keenan.
If this position came with somewhere to live, I could save up a lot of money quickly. I still had plenty left over from Justice but not quite enough to get out of the country. I needed enough to get Keenan and me to a place like Thailand.
At the first red light, I reached for my water.
My breasts brushed against the steering wheel and I felt the tenderness. The hell is that about? I dropped the bottle.
When was the last time I had my period?
I tried to remember. There had been so much going on that I hadn't paid attention. Between Storie, losing my job, and finding Keenan, I could barely keep up with what day it was.
But I should've had one by now.
I'd been nauseous for days, and smells that never used to bother me had me running to the bathroom. Even after sleeping, I was still tired.
“Oh, fuck.”
I might be pregnant.
A horn sounded behind me. The light had changed, and I hadn't moved.
Startled, I drove through the intersection.
I'd been pregnant twice. How the hell had I not considered it? Aubrey had said stress, and I had agreed because I had plenty of that. I hadn't thought to look past it.
I kept trying to come up with the date of my last period. I remembered it being at Justice's house. But when I think about it, it was only one.
My hand glided toward my belly before I put it back on the wheel. This cannot be. I cannot deal with this shit right now.
I needed a test. I couldn't decide I was pregnant just because I was nauseous and late. But the more I thought about it, the harder it was to concentrate on the interview.
