“I talked to Aria,” I announced.
“When?”
“Earlier today.” I rolled my eyes.
His body shifted beneath me.
“How’d that go?”
“She’s a dummy. She’s—”
He waited while I pushed myself up against the pillows.
“I told her I knew Roman was hitting her. She started making excuses. He’s stressed. He has a lot going on. She says things she shouldn’t say. It was so much bullshit.”
Justice shook his head.
“I offered to help her. I thought maybe she’d want to leave, especially with the baby coming.”
“She don’t?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Nope. Apparently, everything is going to be wonderful once her daughter gets here.” I waved my hands performing jazz fingers.
I hadn’t stopped thinking about that part. Aria said it with so much confidence. Roman had already hurt the people living in that house, but she expected him to change for somebody who hadn’t even been born yet.
“And when I brought up Keenan, she acted like I was bothering her. She said he needed discipline.”
Justice’s hand stopped on my leg.
“What the fuck? She really is lost in the sauce.”
“That was Roman speaking. He always talked about disciplining the kids for little shit. It was one of the things that made me file for divorce.”
“You tried your best,” he said to me.
“It just wasn’t good enough,” I responded.
“It doesn’t matter. I told you I’m going to handle it. Can you trust me?” he asked.
“I do trust you. I just hate that I thought I could save my sister. I cared even after all she’s done to me.”
“You have a good heart but she showed her hand. I’m more worried about her snitching to Roman about you.”
“He’s out of town right now. I can ask my son when he’s coming back.”
“Yeah, but have him delete those messages,” he replied.
He brought my hand to his mouth and kissed it. Before I could say anything else, his phone started vibrating on the nightstand. I felt a sense of loss when he parted from me to pick it up.
I could see the name light up. Speak of the devil. It was Roman.
Justice’s jaw tightened. He sat up against the headboard and answered, putting the call on speaker.
“What’s good?”
“Got a minute?” Roman asked.
My stomach tightened at the sound of his voice.
