“This isn’t your fight. Let it go, Steele.”

I couldn’t. I wouldn’t want Kodiak back in the club, but I wasn’t going to see him sleeping with the fishes either. I couldn’t shake the uneasiness in my gut. If Kodiak had shown up tonight, Blade would’ve turned him over to the mother fucking mafia. I’d find him, but I wasn’t saying shit to anyone but Kodiak. I’d trusted the board once. Not this time. I had to get to him before Tank or the Brunos did. “I need to find the sisters.”

“Don’t go unarmed.”

Once I’d dropped off Lili at her mom’s, I sent Jaymi a text. I wouldn’t say we were good, but she wasn’t running because I wasn’t pushing. I’d spent last night with her, and we’d talked on the phone. Almost like dating, only I wasn’t taking her out, and she wasn’t riding on the back of my bike. So not like dating. But it was more than hooking up because I was in love with her.

And here I was, getting pulled back into the shit I’d worked so hard to escape. The situation was fucked. Once I warned Kodiak to watch his six, I never wanted to see him again. The friendship we’d had was over on both sides.

The streets were deserted as I pulled along the curb in front of Good Girl Studios. The windows were dark, and the downtown neighborhood was quiet. I killed the engine, approached the door, and rang the bell. Less than a minute later, Lacey’s voice echoed through the box.

“It’s Steele. I need to talk to Clover.”

The door buzzed, and I pulled it open. From first impressions, no one would know what happened in the upstairs room of the former illegal massage parlor. My footfalls were silent on the carpeting stretching down the hallway. Framed art of watercolor flowers, that looked like pussies and phalluses, hung on the wall.

Lacey came out of the main office. “Hi.” She gave me a quick hug. “Clover’s on a live stream. Do you want a drink while you wait?” She smiled as she led me toward the back office. “Or maybe you’d like to watch?”

“I’m good.” I sat on the leather couch as Lacey went behind the desk. “How long do you think she’ll be?” I could ask Lacey about the sisters, but I was counting on my friendship with Clover to give me some cover. Lacey would go to Bullet and Bullet would go to the board. I was on my own with this. Kodiak wasn’t working alone. I couldn’t risk anyone else getting involved.

“She’s been up there for a couple of hours. She should be about done.”

As her long nails tapped against the keyboard, I pulled out my phone. I scanned through my photos and checked my messages and emails. Every couple of minutes, I checked the clock and watched the hallway.

“Oh my god.” Clover spoke as she came down the hall. She laughed as she came through the office door. She flipped her wet hair over her shoulder. Yoga leggings clung to her narrow hips and showed her bare midriff with a clover tattoo on her pelvis. A thin tank top molded to perfect tits. “You might be getting a complaint,” she said. “The dude wanted me to fart in the bathtub. I can’t fart on demand.” She paused when she noticed me on the couch. “Steele?”

I stood and gave her a hug. “Can we talk somewhere private?”

She smiled. “Sure, as long as you don’t want me to take a bath in heels just so you can watch fart bubbles in the bath water.”

Lacey laughed. “No rush, but if you’re here to fuck, tell me because I’m tired.”

Clover cocked a brow at me.

“I’m just here to talk. Five minutes.” I followed her to what basically looked like a living room with clusters of chairs in one corner, a wet bar along the wall, and a couple couches under the blacked-out windows.

“I’m surprised to see you tonight,” she said. “We haven’t talked much.” She tucked her hair behind her ear. “I thought maybe, since I hadn’t seen Jaymi, that things hadn’t worked out between you. But I didn’t want to pry.”

“The MC wasn’t for her.”

She hummed an understanding sound. “I think being around the MC would be hard for someone not used to it.” A small smile curled her lips. “I’m sorry, Steele. It was good to see you happy.”

I didn’t correct her assumption. Jaymi might never come back to the MC, but we weren’t over. I just had to convince Jaymi. I wasn’t just finding Kodiak for the patch. Once I’d told him the mafia was after him, I was done. “I need a favor, and I need you to keep it between us.”

She lowered into a chair. “Depends on the favor.”

“I’m looking for Kodiak. He’s hanging with the sisters.”

“Christ, Steele. I haven’t worked with them since the fallout with Bullet. They know not to come around.”

I sat next to her. “Kodiak is out bad with the club. His fault. Hundred percent. He needs to get out of town. He fucked over the wrong people, and they’re done playing nice. If they find him before I do, and Skye and Scarlett are with him, they’re going down, too.”

“Why not ask Bullet?”

“Because I’m asking you.” I clasped my hands between my knees. “Kodiak stole from the mafia, Clover. They’re going to kill him. Maybe I can’t stop it. If he shows up at the club, he’s dead, too.”

She rested her hand on my thigh. “Then you shouldn’t be involved in any part of this.”
