Who the fuck was this nigga?
Where had he come from?
And most importantly, how long had they been fucking around?
Folding her arms, Kinsley grew defensive. “I’m not sure what you think you know, but—”
“You’re good, Kins. No explanations needed.”
Dropping the flowers to the ground, I left Kins and ole boy where they stood, intending to head back to the car.
“No!” she yelled. “You don’t get to make an assumption about me and then just walk away.”
“You got it,” I replied without bothering to spare her a glance.
“See! It’s that shit right there! That’s the fucking problem!” she screamed, running down behind me. She sped up as much as she could to block me before I reached the street. “I can never get anything out of you! Not a single emotion. And you think this is how I wanted to spend the rest of my life?”
Yeah, she was guilty. I wasn’t sure of what exactly, but Kinsley had a habit of being aggressive when she was dead ass wrong.
It was all I could do not to laugh as I glanced down at her. “Well, you did what you had to do to ensure that didn’t happen, right? Bullet dodged. Problem solved. What else is there to talk about?”
My lack of reaction to whatever she had going on seemed to push her to a breaking point, but it wasn’t intentional. I wanted to leave, not try to get under her skin. For whatever reason, it pissed her off more.
“You’re going to be alone for the rest of your life, you know that?” she spat, glaring at me. “No one will ever want to be with a man who’s emotionally unavailable. You’re just here. Where’s the fucking appeal in that, Jamie? Women want to be loved, they want romance and fairytales, and all you can ever give is this?” One of her hands flung in my direction as she gestured to me.
“And what exactly is this, Kinsley?” I asked calmly.
I was dying to knock her head off her shoulders, but I wanted answers more. At least the answer to whatever her problem was with me.
“You know what,” she scoffed, tossing her hands into the air. Forget it. It doesn’t matter. Nothing ever matters to you, least of all the relationship you didn’t even bother to fight for.”
My hold on my anger slipped. “What the fuck am I fighting for? You made it clear you didn’t want to be here, and I honestly should be thanking you for doing me a favor. You saved me from marrying someone who’d easily open her legs for the next nigga after only being days removed from the first one. Or have y’all been fucking this entire time?”
“If I was fucking someone else, it’d be a step up from the miserable, lackluster ass man I was with,” she fired back.
My fist curled, the first sign I was about to lose my self-control. It was definitely time for me to get out of dodge. She wanted to piss me off, but I don’t think Kins was aware of how dangerously close she was to succeeding.
“Then do yo’ thing,” I replied, stepping around her.
“Jamie…”
“Move,” I barked, making her jump.
Kinsley didn’t say anything else, and I successfully made it to the car and pulled off without running her the fuck over. Our entire argument replayed in my head as I drove through the city, attempting to sort out how shit managed to go so left.
No matter how pissed I might have been at her, I’d have never let something like what she’d said fly out of my mouth. There was still a certain level of respect there. At least on my end. If it hadn’t been clear to me before, it was damn sure clear to me now there wasn’t a future for us.
We could never come back from the place she’d taken us to.
My game plan was to ride around aimlessly until my anger diminished, but the longer I drove, the worse it got. Xi came to mind, and without another thought, I changed course, heading to her job.
It was too early in the day to be drinking, but it was either that or risk going back to Kinsley’s and catching an assault charge. I’d choose a hangover over a charge any day.
Chapter Five
NYX
“Thank the Lord,” I huffed, bringing a hand to my forehead. I’d only been at work for an hour, and it was already one of the longest days of my life. Dealing with people was unusually difficult since I was still riding the wave of bitterness from running into Shane’s wife. “I can’t wait until this damn day is over.”
