“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I’m just tired of hiding it. It feels like I’m living a double life by trying to keep everyone happy.”
“Damn, I need to get new bae a hell of a gift. She managed to come along and do what I’ve been trying to do for years.”
“Don’t start. This doesn’t have anything to do with Nyx.”
“A’ight. If you say so.”
“The fuck is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing,” Judah laughed. “At least, nothing I can tell you. This is one you’re going to have to realize on your own, bruh.”
“Whatever, nigga. I just called to tell you that I’m likely officially in the black sheep club.”
“Ain’t nothing wrong with that. Welcome to freedom and the world of doing what you want to do and not giving a fuck who has something to say about it. It took you long enough.”
“And on that note, I’m gone.”
“What you got planned for the day? Swing through if you ain’t doing shit.”
“Can’t. I have plans.”
That damn girl.
“With whom?”
“Bye, Judah.”
The sound of his laughter reached my ears as we disconnected the call. Strangely, I didn’t mind him clowning me. I wasn’t ashamed of spending time with Nyx, or our friendship. Putting the events of the morning to the back of my mind, I took the ride home to shower, change, and get ready for whatever Nyx had up her sleeve.
She hadn’t exhibited any wild behavior, yet, but as fiery as she was, I knew that deep down, there was a lot more to her that she hadn’t revealed. Every day, I found myself more and more excited for the journey of learning more about her and watching her evolve.
“Hell no,” I moved the shot glass Nyx attempted to hand me out of my face. “That shit looks nasty as hell.”
Whatever was combined in the shot glass, created a milky look I wasn’t getting anywhere close to. I didn’t give a damn how many times she asked.
“It’s a Bailey’s pudding shot, you big weenie.”
“Grow up, Nyx,” I snorted.
“Never,” she pouted. “Just sip it.”
“No.”
Rolling her eyes, she took the shot to the head, smoothly swallowing the liquid. “See? No harm done.”
“Order something that looks normal next time, and then we won’t have this problem.”
“Something tells me that no matter what, you’re always going to make things problematic. It’s okay, though. I like the fight of it all.”
“Has anyone ever told you that you have issues?”
“Just you, so I’m not sure how much of it I believe.”
“Wow, you don’t take me for my word? Me? Your best friend in the whole wide world?”
Nyx’s smile was bright enough to light up my entire world.
“We’re best friends now?”
