“I will,” she threw over her shoulder before leaving the two older women in the restaurant to retrieve her husband.
The interrogation room was too cold for comfort, but Cassius refused to give the impression that it bothered him. Cassius sat at the metal table with his hands folded loosely in front of him, the cuffs resting against his wrists more out of procedure than necessity. A single light hung overhead, casting a harsh glow that flattened everything it touched. He leaned back in the chair, unbothered, one ankle crossing over the opposite knee like he had all the time in the world.
The mirrored wall across from him reflected nothing, but he knew better than to believe he was alone. Cassius tilted his head slightly, eyes settling on the door as if he could see straight through it.
Moments later, the door opened with a quiet click, and Iris Calloway entered.
Cassius smiled. “I bet you spent days wondering if that entrance would have the effect you thought it would. It didn’t.”
“Funny,” she sneered, tossing a folder onto the table. “You’re in a comedic mood for a man who’s facing life in prison.”
Cassius snorted. “Life in prison for what?”
“Murder,” Iris revealed, taking the seat across from him.
“Damn, who died?”
“You should know. You’re the one who snapped his neck.”
Cassius wrinkled his eyebrows. “Mmmmm, don’t recall snapping any necks lately. But it does sound like an effective way to solve a problem. Are you volunteering as tribute?”
“You’re going to keep trying to joke your way out of this, huh?”
“I don’t have anything to joke my way out of.”
Suddenly sitting forward, Iris opened the folder and slapped her hand against it. Cassius lazily dropped his eyes to the crime scene photos displaying his handiwork.
“Daniel Korr revealed information about your family that led to an investigation, and then ended up dead. You think that I’d believe that you didn’t have something to do with that?”
“I don’t give a fuck what you believe,” Cassius shrugged. “But for boredom’s sake, I’ll play along. When am I supposed to have allegedly killed him?”
“Over a month ago, when he was found dead.”
“Well, that’s vague,” he smirked. “I was thinking more along the lines of a date.”
“January 26th.”
Cassius clicked his tongue. “Ooh. Couldn’t have been me. I was at my engagement party.”
“So I learned,” Iris folded her hands. “But through my investigation, I also learned that there was a time during the party when you weren’t accounted for.”
“I’m sure you did your due diligence and learned that my fiancée also wasn’t accounted for during that time. We were in the bathroom. And I’m sure I don’t need to paint a picture about what we were doing.”
Iris’ eyes flashed angrily. “Farina men think they’re so charming.”
“It’s a gift and a curse,” he replied smugly.
Iris froze, then knocked on the table three times.
“Is that supposed to be a signal for something?”
She waited to respond until there were two knocks against the door.
“It was actually. For my partner to go dark and cut all audio and video for this little chat.”
“Hmmm,” Cassius shot her a lopsided grin. “Let me guess, we’re finally getting to the bottom of your issue?”
Licking her lips, she shook her head. “To be honest, I couldn’t give a fuck less about Daniel Korr. One less dirty politician to police if you ask me.”
