Vegas grimaced as she set her purse down and rolled her shoulders. “It had its moments. It was hard to tell, but I think she was happy in the end.” Her gaze drifted to Sinead. “Have you got a moment?”
Sinead nodded as she hit the enter button on her latest search. “I’ll be right with you.” She hopped up and hurried after Vegas into her private office.
“Take a seat,” Vegas said as she settled in a chair on the opposite side of her desk.
“I know what you’re going to say.” Sinead decided to pre-empt Vegas. “I messed up yesterday. I was a no-show.”
Vegas raised a hand to quiet her. “You were. That meant everyone had to work late to cover for you. We don’t mind if it’s an emergency, but you have to let me know. If we don’t hit our targets, we all get Diadora chasing us.”
Sinead ducked her head. “I’m sorry. Things ran away with me yesterday. I promise I’ll make up for it. I’ve done extra today, and I can stay late. It won’t happen again.”
“Is there anything you need to tell me?” Vegas asked. “Have you got problems outside of work that are getting in the way?”
Sinead longed to share what was going on with Vegas, but she didn’t know what to say. She still didn’t know how she felt about Talyn or how they should progress. “It’s nothing. It’s all sorted. I’ve had some promising matches today. That should help keep the numbers up.”
Vegas leaned back in her seat. “Sinead, you’re great at your job. It’s why I make allowances for you when you turn up a bit late in the mornings. You’re always willing to please and have a natural knack for coming up with amazing couples from our database.”
Sinead nodded, knowing this compliment wasn’t the end of the conversation.
Vegas sighed. “Diadora’s a stickler for the rules. If she figures out you’re not playing by them, she will come after you. I don’t agree with it, but you’re on your final warning. One more, and she’ll get rid of you, no matter how great your couplings are.”
Sinead gazed at her hands. She had to get this sorted. She couldn’t let her love life get any more tangled. It was one of the reasons she never got serious about anyone. There were always complications. A serious relationship tied you down. She liked being free. She’d only known Talyn a few days, and he was already messing up the rest of her life.
“Keep your head down. Don’t draw any attention from Diadora, and everything will be fine,” Vegas said.
“That’s what I always try to do.”
Vegas nodded. She tapped her fingers on the desk. “Any update on our potential client you’ve been looking after? Is he still under the weather?”
“Oh! Yes, as far as I know.” Sinead’s cheeks flushed as she remembered how she’d made him feel better.
“There’s been no sign of Talyn in any of the induction sessions. He’s missed three days. Any more, and it will be tricky to get him a suitable match. We can only do so much based on the profile he gave us. You know how important it is for us to have face-to-face meetings with every client, so we know what they need.”
“I know he wants a mate.” In fact, he had one.
Vegas nodded. “It sounds like you get on with him. If you’ve got the time, I’d like you to be more hands-on with Talyn. Give him the personal treatment. Get to know what his likes and interests are.”
Sinead bit her lip. If she hadn’t been so hands-on with Talyn in the first place, she wouldn’t be in this mess. “I’m really busy this week.”
“A couple of hours of overtime won’t do you harm,” Vegas said. “Remember, we all covered for you yesterday.”
“Fine, fine. I know you did me a solid. I appreciate it.” Sinead pressed her lips together. She knew exactly what Talyn wanted in a mate, and she couldn’t give it to him. “It’s no problem.”
“That’s great. We’ve almost reached our client sign-up numbers for this month. If we can get Talyn and half a dozen more, we might all find ourselves with a bonus in our pay packets.”
Sinead hated the thought of letting Vegas down. “I’ll see what I can do.”
“Thanks. You’ll do an amazing job.” Vegas smiled at her as Sinead left the room.
“Everything okay?” Kendra nodded at Vegas’s office.
“It’s fine. Vegas wants me to do a bit of one-on-one with a new client.”
Kendra grinned. “I hope it doesn’t interfere with your new love life.”
Sinead suppressed a grimace. “I doubt it will. I’ll see you tomorrow. I need to visit with a client.” She said a quick goodbye to everyone and left the office. What a mess. She needed to think fast and find a solution.
Her wrist comm buzzed, announcing an incoming message. Sinead flicked it open, and her eyes widened.
