“Excuse me,” he said as he turned away from Talyn. “What’s the problem?”

“There’s a human female here. She’s demanding to see Talyn.”

Talyn opened his eyes and peered at Dr. Cross. “There must be a mistake. No one knows I’m here.”

“What does she want?”

“She’s demanding to see Talyn. She said she’s his wife.”

Chapter 19

Sinead paced backward and forward, all too aware she was being scrutinized by the curious receptionist and two tall, broad-shouldered security guards who’d arrived a few moments ago and watched her with stern expressions on their faces.

She didn’t care about any of that. Her feelings alternated between anger at Talyn and worry for his safety. A part of her was furious. How dare he do this? They were supposed to be mates, and he’d decided to do something so significant and life changing and hadn’t bothered to tell her.

She ignored the sniping voice in her head that sneered that she’d left him. She’d planned to break their partnership. Sinead wouldn’t think about that. She had to make sure Talyn changed his mind and didn’t go through with this dangerous procedure.

Holly had been amazing in getting Sinead here and had broken numerous speed restrictions, so they could get to Talyn before he went through with this expunge. She was waiting in her ship while Sinead went into the clinic to deal with her idiot mate.

A tall, calm-faced Lillip approached from the opposite end of the corridor. He spoke a few words to the receptionist before walking to Sinead. “You’re here to see Talyn?”

She lifted her chin. “That’s right. You must stop him from going through with this expunge.”

He patted her arm. “I’m Doctor Cross. I’m looking after Talyn. I appreciate your concern, but your mate has made up his mind.”

“He’s not thinking clearly. Talyn has been struggling, but I can help him with that if you let me see him.”

“My patient is resting. That’s the best thing for him right now.”

“I only need five minutes.” Sinead looked over Dr. Cross’s shoulder. “Where is he?”

“In a private room. He cannot be disturbed.”

“I won’t be disturbing him. I’m his wife. I mean, we’re life mates. Our partnership is new, but he’ll want to see me.”

“He informed me he wants no visitors.”

“Does Talyn know I’m here?” Sinead couldn’t believe he’d refuse to see her.

“He knows you’re here. He said I can discuss his procedure with you but asked to be left on his own. Talyn has been sedated so he can sleep before his procedure tomorrow morning.”

“There won’t be any procedure.” Sinead could see she was getting nowhere with Dr. Cross. Maybe if she tried a little charm, it would help. She flashed him a megawatt smile. “A couple of tiny minutes with my mate. Surely, every girl is entitled to that.”

A small smile played across the doctor’s face. “If he had agreed to that, I’d be happy to let you through. I have to consider what’s best for my patient. Talyn is in a great deal of distress. He barely made it here and was struggling to remain conscious while I assessed him. His brain pattern indicates he needs help if he’s to maintain his mental stability. We don’t undertake expunges lightly. Talyn considers this the last resort. I have to admit I agree with him.”

“You’re wrong,” Sinead said. “Talyn doesn’t need this. All he needs is me. I’m here to help him.”

Dr. Cross frowned, his gaze flicking to the guards. “You’re too late. He’s made his decision.”

Sinead gritted her teeth and checked on the security guards. They were no longer focused on her and were checking their wrist comms.

There was no chance this smug doctor would let her through. “Fine, I’ll go, but let me know as soon as Talyn wants to see me.”

“If he changes his mind, I’ll let you know.”

Sinead made as if to leave but turned at the last second, dodged around Dr. Cross and raced past him, shooting past the reception desk and the surprised looking security guards.

She pumped her arms and legs as she heard the security guards’ feet pounding behind her. Sinead had to find Talyn. She had to make him change his mind. If she could speak to him, she’d make him see this was madness and there was another way. She’d been stupid, running out on him and being scared of what he offered. Now she was so close to losing him, she knew she couldn’t face that. She didn’t want to face life without Talyn.
