“I don’t need one. Where are the meds?”

“I was about to get them when Rexx alerted me we’d been spotted. I came straight back for you. I’ll go get them now.”

“Everyone stay in their seats,” Rexx yelled from the cockpit. “The ships are in pursuit, and I can’t shake them loose. It could get bumpy while I avoid them.”

“How long before you outrun them?” Ash said.

“As long as it takes. Sit back and enjoy the flight.”

“You have to take some of my energy. Just a small amount,” Ash said to Georgia. “It’ll keep you going. You can’t fight this on your own, and I can’t get to the medical supplies until Rexx and Daisy shake loose our shadows.”

“You don’t even know what’s wrong with me.”

“It doesn’t matter. I’ll be able to heal you. Apexians can heal from anything.”

“Don’t be so smug about it.”

“I’m being truthful. One shot of power from me, and you’ll be bouncing with energy.”

Georgia nodded and gritted her teeth as Ash made a small cut on her palm. He did the same to his own hand then joined them.

The usual warm flow of Apexian energy flooded over her. It felt like she was being wrapped in her favorite soft blanket.

Georgia’s head continued to pound, and the dizziness got worse.

Ash grunted and tightened his grip on her hand. “Give it a minute. It’s taking its sweet time. You must have something really nasty in your system.”

Georgia opened one eye, panic flaring through her. “It’s not working.”

“It is. Concentrate on absorbing my power. Don’t fight it. I know what you’re like. You always want to fix everything on your own.”

“I won’t fight you so long as this gets me better,” she said. “It doesn’t usually take this long, does it?”

“Hold tight, everyone,” Rexx yelled. “The ships have locked weapons on us. I’m moving to diversionary tactics. There’s an asteroid belt up ahead, so we can lose them in there.”

Ash checked her straps were secure before fastening his own. He didn’t let go of her hand as his energy continued to pump into her.

“What’s wrong?” Blaze muttered from his seat next to Eden. “Why isn’t Georgia healing?”

Eden shrugged and shook her head. “Beats me. Any ideas, Ash?”

“I don’t know,” he said, worry clear in his eyes. “The energy transfer should have worked by now. If anything, Georgia’s looking worse.”

“And I’m feeling worse,” she said. “I’m also conscious, so don’t talk about me like I’m not here.”

“Sorry,” Ash said. “Maybe you just need more time.”

She pursed her lips as the ship bounced from side to side. The motion made her want to puke.

Eden turned to Blaze. “You should try to give Georgia an energy transfer.”

“Sure. If you think it’ll help,” Blaze said.

“I’ve got this,” Ash growled out, hunching protectively over Georgia.

“I can feel Ash’s energy. It’s not malfunctioning,” she said. “It’s just not having its usual effect.” Worry trickled through her. What the hell had she picked up on that planet?

Blaze leaned forward in his seat, his expression tense. “It’s unusual for our healing powers to have no effect on an injury, but I’ve seen it happen before. It’s usually when we come across an alien species or disease we’ve never encountered. Our energy doesn’t recognize it’s a problem to begin with, so doesn’t heal it.”
