“I’m all out of honey butter buns.”
“Dang, what else you got that’s good?”
“Everything we serve is good,” Rhonda informed him, walking over to stand beside me.
“Well give me a regular cinnamon roll and one of the caramel ones with the nuts on it.”
“Coming right up,” I told him.
“Oh, I got something for you,” he said, moving his hand from behind his back and revealing a red rose.
“Thank you.” I smiled.
“It’s from the boss man.”
“Oh, wow. Well tell him I said thank you.”
“I will.”
As he walked off, two more of the mechanics walked over holding roses of their own. They ordered bacon, ham, and Swiss croissants and left right as another one of them came out. I had six roses by the time the lady who worked at the desk came out with another six roses in a glass vase.
“Good morning. I’m sure you need some water for your roses by now.”
“Thank you, Jill.”
“Quinton gave me one of those honey butter buns before they sold out. I have to make sure I get some tomorrow. My husband will love them.”
“I’ll put you some aside.”
“Thank you. I think the boss has a crush on you. I’ve never seen him buy flowers for anyone.”
“You might be onto something.”
“Girl, you know that man wants you,” Rhonda chimed in.
Rhonda talked too much. That was exactly why I hadn’t mentioned the new development in our relationship.
“That’s all I’m saying. He seems like a good catch, but if he screws up and you end up leaving, I’m kicking his ass if I have to come all the way across town to get my donuts.”
“I’m glad you’re on my side.” I laughed.
“Us women have to stick together,” Jill said.
Once Jill was gone, I turned to Rhonda. “Since you’re so invested, I invited Quinton and his son over for dinner tonight.”
“OK, so he finally wore you down.”
“I also agreed to go on a date with him Friday without the kids.”
“I know that’s right. About time. Somebody needs to dust the cobwebs off that thing.”
“Girl, bye. You better be glad some customers are coming up, or I would tell you something.”
“You just let me know if you need a sitter Friday night. I’m not letting nothing stand in the way of you riding that ride.”
“This is why I don’t fool with you.”
“Girl, look.” Rhonda pointed over my shoulder.
