“What’s a restaurant deal got to do with Sophia?”

“Everyone loves a love story.”

I stand up straight. A love story? Is that what we are? The more important question is, could Sophia ever love me?

Maybe sensing the hesitation in my voice, Terry says, “Love is good for everyone’s brand.”

“Sophia’s off-limits.” My jaw tightens.

Terry sighs. “Kid, all the investors want the duo they’ve seen online, the beautiful angry bride and the handsome chef. That’s why I called the other day. I want you to do some interviews together. Make it look official.”

Casey closes in. “But, Gio, aren’t you and Sophia together? You abandoned your event for her.”

“You abandoned your event!” Terry’s voice pitches higher. He knocks something over. Maybe his dentures fell out, or his head finally explodes.

“Hold on,” I say to Terry.

Lowering the phone, I turn to Casey.

“You know how this goes. If everyone thinks we’re together, it’ll make all the wedding backlash for Sophia worse. It could make this battle she has with Roman and his social-media trolls go on forever. It doesn’t matter if it’s real. I don’t want her to get hurt.”

“I know you don’t, but is this thing between you temporary? Doesn’t seem like it. Are you going to hide her away forever? You’re never going to go out on a real date and live your life? What happens when we leave Hawaii?”

“I, I . . .” I hadn’t thought that far. I swallow. Things are so fragile, like a piece of intricately blown glass. I wanted to keep us in bubble wrap as long as possible.

I want to keep her to myself as long as possible.

My lips turn down at the edges. Maybe my motivations aren’t only to keep Sophia safe. Maybe this is more complex, and I’ve been letting my own desires cloud my judgment.

“I understand.” Casey places a hand on my shoulder and squeezes. “You don’t have to explain, but you should be thinking ahead. You can have a successful career and be happy. Sophia can benefit from this too. Her ex-fiancé drama will die off eventually. It isn’t just your life; it’s an opportunity for both of you.”

I nod. “You’re right, but I need a little more time with her.” I sigh. “I’m not ready to talk about this yet.”

“Talk to me about what?” Sophia appears on the landing.

I watch with admiration as she descends the stairs. There’s a flounce in her step, and a gorgeous glow radiates from her smile. I need more time in our bubble. She’ll be leaving soon, and I have no idea what comes next. It’s selfish, but I’m not ready to give this up yet. Besides, how can I press Sophia for more after what she’s gone through? Even if I want it, she may not be ready.

I lift the phone and say, “Sorry, Ter, I need more time.” Then I end the call.

Casey returns to her computer on the pool deck, and Matt pouts outside.

Sophia’s hand slips around my bicep. She leans so close, her breath tickles my cheek. My dick awakens, and everything I was worried about two seconds ago disappears. Nothing else matters when I’m with her.

“What secrets are you keeping now?” She bats her eyelashes.

I gather her in my arms. “So.” I kiss her neck. “Many.” I drag my lips down her jaw. “Secrets.”

I kiss her nose. Then I grab her tightly, whip her to the side, and dip her like we’re dancing. She squeals, her smile somehow brighter than before.

I’m so lost for her. So fucking lost.

I lean in to taste her lips. Today, they taste like she’s almost mine.
