For now.
“Why is this happening to me?” Jenna’s voice broke the stillness. “And how is it connected to you and a grandmother I’ve never met?”
Brody nearly groaned. She wanted to have this conversation now? She was right, though. She deserved to know everything.
“Your grandfather built an empire, and your father was meant to inherit everything. When he died, your grandmother created a trust just for you. She never stopped believing that you’d return one day. It’s her belief, and mine as well, that you were abducted so one day someone could steal your trust. And I think they are coming for you now to make sure you don’t get your hands on it.”
Maybe it was blunt, but she needed to know.
Somewhere out there, villains were planning and doing their best to find them and ambush them. He and Jenna didn’t have much of a headstart.
CHAPTER 8
Jenna stared out the window, not seeing the snow blanketing the hillside. Usually, she appreciated the beauty of the seasons. Right now, her mind whirled with everything she’d heard.
The attack. The abduction and adoption. The search through her house.
Being targeted by multiple killers for money she’d never known she possessed. Saved under a name she’d never known was hers. It was too much.
The tears she’d held at bay trickled down her cheek. She leaned her head against the cold window and closed her eyes.
“Jenna.”
Slowly, she peeled her lids off her eyes and stared over at Brody. She couldn’t find the energy to answer.
“Hmmm?”
“We’ll get through this.”
“You can’t promise that. No one can.” By tomorrow, she might be greeting her parents in Heaven.
Then she froze.
Both sets of parents.
She’d been thinking so hard about the grandmother trying to find her, she never considered the parents she’d left behind.
“You okay?” Brody asked.
She sat up. “I’m not sure. You said my grandmother hired you to find me.”
“Yep. Claudia Ellis. She’s a feisty lady. You remind me of her a little.”
She liked being thought of as feisty. It was better than weak or defenseless. “Tell me about my parents.”
His hand flexed on the steering wheel. “John and Amanda Ellis. He was Claudia’s only child. They never had any other children after you were born. They were killed in a car crash seven years ago. I never knew them, but from what I’ve heard, they were both fine people.”
Jenna’s heart beat so rapidly inside her chest, it hurt. She placed a hand over it and pressed, attempting to hold the ache in.
“Six years.” She stopped and cleared her throat. “Six years ago my parents crashed while on vacation going to a ski lodge. Brakes failed. I’d planned to go with them but got sick at the last moment. They couldn’t back out. They were meeting friends who’d already made reservations and bought non-refundable tickets for them.”
“Jenna.”
She turned her head. “It can’t be just a coincidence. They were murdered. All of them. And I was supposed to die then, too. I want to know why.”
“I’ll tell you. Later. Right now, we have company.” His gaze shot between the rearview mirror and the front window. He squinted.
Light filled the SUV.
