“I find him standoffish,” she admits. “During the championship, he kind of kept to himself. I mean, he partied with the guys, but it’s like he keeps everyone at arm’s length, doesn’t let anyone get too close.”
“I think it’s because of the trauma of his wife leaving him for his best friend. Finding out your spouse is cheating is bad, but to discover her in bed with your best friend…I would be devastated.”
“And men don’t deal with those kinds of emotions very well. Instead of therapy, they just drink with their friends or whatever.”
“I think he’s coming out of his shell, though,” I say thoughtfully. “At least, he is with me, and it seems like he’s gotten friendly with his roommates.”
“I guess that’s a start.”
“You don’t like him?” I ask curiously.
“I don’t know him, to be honest,” she says. “It sounds like you’re crazy about him but I haven’t seen the two of you together much. Watching how he treats you going forward will determine how I feel about him.”
“He’s good to me,” I say. “We’ve been taking things slow because we’re both so busy, but it feels like we’ve turned a corner.”
“That’s good, right?”
“It is. I don’t blame him for being cautious. I mean, Shandy did a number on him.”
“Speaking of Shandy, have you heard the rumor that she might guest star in an episode of the show?”
“What?” I drop the pins I’m holding in my haste to look up at her.
“I heard it yesterday while I was sitting in the makeup chair, and then again today from Lacy.”
“Jesus fucking Christ.” I shake my head.
“I hear she’s quite the diva. Lacy’s worked with her a few times and she doesn’t like her at all.”
“I’ve never even met her, and I don’t like her,” I mutter, bending over to gather the pins I dropped.
“Are you going to tell Cash?”
“Not until we know for sure she’s coming.”
“Yeah, no reason to worry him.”
“I wonder if I can make an excuse to be out of town—they already know I have commitments in New York that I have to fly back and forth for.”
“But then you risk Cash running into her some other way. What if she shows up at a game or something?”
“Why would she?”
“She sounds like a bitch—she may want to flaunt her new husband in her ex-husband’s face.”
I scowl. “I want to cut this bitch.”
Serena laughs. “Same.”
“I’m going to talk to a few people, see if it’s legit.”
“And if it is?”
“I’ll give Cash a head’s up.”
I don’t want to think about that, though.
Something tells me he won’t react well.
