“Uh, no, I was not fucking Makai,” I answer in between an eye roll, “We’re still broken up, sis.”
“Oh. Well, excuse the blue hell out of me,” she says while clutching her chest, “I thought maybe I was about to hear a second-chance romance story or something.”
“Nope. No Wattpad story here, babes. His ass will never taste this again.”
“Hmm, never say never,” she replies, smirking deviously. “Well, okay, if it’s not him, then who?”
“The question isn’t who, per se. More like them.”
She sits up so I can see the judgement tattooed all over her well-moisturized face. Her face is so shiny, she looks like a damn filter.
“Them? Is this a Jordan Peele movie? Them? Girl, what the hell? Are you in a poly thang now or something?”
I grit my teeth like an iPhone emoji. “Um, I mean, kind…of….”
“Sis?” Her tone is harsher.
“Big sis?” My tone is full of innocence. “What the hell is going on? Talk.”
I vent after a sigh, “Okay, so, I’ve started kicking it with this couple. Both of them are sexy as hell. And we’re just… having some fun.”
“Yeah, okay, Ms. Having Some Fun. You just better watch yourself. Because those types of couples can be quite dangerous. Even more so than the average bachelor. You know I stay watching Snapped Couples.”
“And?”
“And I need you to watch yourself.”
“Oh, trust me, I’m never worried about anybody snapping on me. It’s always the other way around. You know this.”
“All too well. Which reminds me. Have you been taking your meds?”
“I don’t take those anymore, Sajai.”
“Your doctor took you off them?”
“No, but I haven’t needed them in a while. I’m good, I swear.”
“Syren, please don’t be in Milwaukee losing your damn mind again. You know I worry about you. Don’t make me catch a flight over you. Because I will. Besides, you really need to come here and kick it with your big sister for a while.”
“I know, I know. There’s just a lot going on in the city right now for me to do that.”
“Bullshit. I already told you I’d pay your rent for the whole month just so you can get here. You could stay with me for a few weeks. I could show you around L.A. Introduce you to some of these fine ass L.A niggas. Or girls. Whichever one fits your interest the most. Hell, you might even love it here so much, you’ll want to stay full time. I’m just saying, you don’t have to stay there anymore, sis. Just think about it.”
“Yeah, you’re right. I hear you. And I’ll keep it in mind.”
She raises her right eyebrow towards her forehead like the Rock.
“You promise?” “I do.”
“Good, that’s all I needed to hear. I love you, sis. Please keep your head up. I’ll let you get some sleep. Hit me up when you get the chance.”
“Yeah, I got you. And I love you too.”
We hang up almost at the same time, taking me right back to my TikTok binge. It’s not that I don’t want to see my sister. I do. I miss her to no end. And I honestly could use a break from the city. Especially if it means touching down in L.A. It’s just that leaving comes with so much responsibility. My entire life is still here. My job. My future classes. My new friends. It seems like I’m just starting to find myself again.
Or it could just be talking myself off that ledge because I know it means starting over, again. Sometimes it’s just not worth the struggle doing that. However, I promised to keep it in mind, so I will. It just feels unlikely. At least for now. Who knows though. If the opportunity strikes, I’d be walking the streets of California faster than an escort finds a high-priced hotel. Until then, I have a couple to continue to experience. Because my plan for them goes far beyond just sex at this point.
