He shrugs carelessly.

“Aye, I’m here, what’s up? You said it was an emergency. And why are we meeting here?”

“It is. And we’re meeting here because I said so. I need you to do something for me.” “What?”

“My new friends. I need one of them gone.”

He throws a look of confusion my way. Can’t say I blame him. I’m not necessarily asking him to be my spades partner at the barbecue.

“So, you cut me off, and now you want me to commit murder for you?” he asks, arms spread wide.

“I didn’t say that. I just said I needed one of them gone. How you make it happen, that’s on you.” Makai chuckles dryly. “And what exactly do I get out of this?”

“Me,” I answer emphatically, “That’s what you want, right?”

“Syren, I’m still not getting this shit. Why switch up all of a sudden?”

Impatience is setting in as I suck my teeth at him. “Makai, you ask too many damn questions. I just need you to help me here.”

“How come you don’t do it? Huh? You didn’t hesitate in slicing up that one dude.”

Just like I said. The gangsta in him is nonexistent.

“I told you never to bring that up,” My volume’s growing louder, “And for the record, I didn’t hesitate because I didn’t have a choice. Just like I choose not to get my hands dirty this time. Are you going to do this or not?”

He sighs hard, placing his hands into his pockets. He thinks on it for a moment in silence with his head down. Time skips ahead two minutes before he finally looks back up, now showing interest.

“Aight, give me the addy. Who am I looking for?”

“I’ve already sent it to your phone. His name is Damien Ross. That’s the address to his coffee shop.”

Makai looks down at his picture in shock. Suddenly, his hands become fists. He stands there, almost growling; he's so full of anger.

“Ayo, I know this mothafucka,” he reveals, “This is the same hoe ass nigga who came into my shop tripping that one day. On a G, this nigga is fuckin’ cooked.”

Looks like my plan just got even easier.

“Good. Just him, Makai. Nobody else. Just him. I want you to wait for him to leave work and then take his ass out. I don’t give a fuck if you shoot him, stab him, blow his ass up with dynamite. Whatever. Just get it done and hit me up after.”

“Bet. I’ll lay this nigga out for you.”

He’s all hyped up and ready. Like a good little submissive shoulder should be. He’s bobbing his head repeatedly, biting down on his bottom lip like it’s supposed to be his killer face. Chile, I guess. I add a cherry on top of the sundae by kissing him square on the lips. Providing false hope for the aftermath. When in reality, it feels more like the kiss of death.

“I know you will,” I say, “And I'll be waiting.”

I will not. If I have my way, I will be somewhere in the Sun State. Having Mai Tai’s with my sister. Because I’m not sure if Makai can really get the job done. Knowing him, three things might happen. He’ll either kill Damien, Damien will kill him and take a charge. Or if I’m really lucky, they take each other out. Leaving the door open for me to come back and really make things work with Morgan. Either way, at least there’ll be two birds killed with one stone.

For now, my sister is right. I need to get the fuck out of here. Right now. Whatever happens next, I won’t be here to see it. After Makai leaves, I jump back into the car, instantly calling her. She answers within seconds like her phone was already in hand.

“What’s up sis?” she says first.

“Hey, is that offer still on the table?”

“Offer?”

My voice has a sense of urgency to it, “To come to visit you in Cali. Is it?”

“Oh, yeah. Anytime you want sis, just give me the word.”
