Maggie gave a frantic bark and stormed the door that had swallowed her sister—
And stumbled right through with a startled yelp.
Ronan chuckled. “Brave girl.”
The flap moved again, and Maisie’s face appeared. She gave a series of snuffle-barks, pushed through, then promptly turned and went back out.
Felicity drew in a breath and grabbed his arm as Millie moved forward.
The old lady stared at the opening for a long moment, then looked up at Felicity.
“Go on. You can do it.”
Millie looked at the door again, huffed, and oh so slowly walked through, exaggerating the lift of each leg.
Felicity clapped her hands. “She did it!” she called out, turning a beaming face toward him.
“Told you they’re smart.” It took everything in him not to steal a kiss. But once he had his mouth on hers, all bets would be off. Felicity needed to make the first move this time.
She swatted his arm. “Know-it-all,” she whispered in passing and opened the door. “It no longer creaks.” She shot him a dirty look. “I liked the squeak.”
Ronan merely shrugged and stepped outside. Best to be on his way.
He began gathering his tools when she cleared her throat. “You hungry?”
He glanced up. A deep scowl was etched across her face. “I could eat.”
“I was going to order pizza,” she added quickly.
“What kind?”
“Anchovies,” she said.
Ronan blinked.
“With pineapple.”
It was a dare.
He stared at her for a beat. “That’s … controversial.”
“So I’ve been told.”
His mouth twitched. “I’m in.”
Her brows lifted. “Seriously?”
“It won’t kill me.”
She snorted and grabbed her phone.
By the time the pizza arrived, the dogs had mastered the doggie door and were parading in and out like they’d invented it.
Ronan leaned back in the kitchen chair, a slice of pizza in hand. “Anchovies and pineapple,” he said thoughtfully. “Not bad.”
Felicity watched him take another bite. “Told you.”
He’d taken a few minutes to snoop when he’d used the bathroom earlier. The house was small enough to offer a glimpse into nearly every room from the hallway.
