“You’re turned on.” His thumb slid down the top of my spine.

I swatted his hand off the back of my neck.

He chuckled and sat back in his seat.

I tried to focus on Uncle James’ words, but all I could think about was the green eyes boring into the back of my head.

And then I felt his fingers again. Gently brushing my hair off the back of my neck. His hot breath was in my ear.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Well, good. He should be. I nodded. I appreciated his apology. But I was also going to need him to apologize for saying that Mr. Halifax was a mistake over and over again. Because that had been seriously annoying. Or maybe that’s what he was apologizing for?

I turned my head slightly and his lips brushed against my ear. I swallowed hard. “What exactly are you apologizing for? Because I can think of a few things.”

“I’m sorry that I didn’t get here sooner,” he whispered.

What?

“If I’d been transferred a few weeks earlier, I could have saved you from all this hurt, Aphrodite.”

I clenched my jaw and turned back toward the board. That was not an apology! He was just doubling down on his shit.

It took forever for the bell to ring.

“I can’t wait to watch these tryouts,” Scarlett said.

I rolled my eyes.

“I’m gonna go tell my dad I’m staying for them.” She walked up to Uncle James’ desk.

“See you in the stands, Aphrodite.” Adonis rapped his fingers on my desk to get my attention as he passed. “Cheer for me?”

“Bite me.”

“Gladly.” He smiled.

Jacob cleared his throat.

“See you later, guys,” Adonis said. And then he winked at me and walked out the door.

“Why aren’t you rearranging his dumb face?” I asked Jacob.

“He didn’t really do anything,” Jacob said. “You’re the one that asked him to bite you.”

“I was joking!”

He laughed. “I know. But still...he’s just being him.”

“Well, he’s incorrigible.” I stood up.

Scarlett hurried back over. “This is going to be so much fun. I really hope they all make the team. Sure you two don’t want to try out too?” She looked at Axel and Jacob.

Jacob laughed. “Definitely not.”

“To go from our championship game to joining the basketball team?” Axel laughed. “Really?”
