Chapter Twenty-Six

Now

Corrie

We walk towards Westerpark, and I wonder if we’re going to stop for a drink at one of the bars in the Westergasfabriek buildings, but Luuk doesn’t seem to pay them any mind. I’m even more baffled when we stop in front of Fabrique des Lumières.

I’ve been to the light installation space a few times and am planning to take the kids now that their attention spans are slightly larger than a gnat’s, so I won’t have to constantly chase them around.

Some years ago, there was a market hosted inside the cavernous space, complete with vintage couches, tables, even carpets, that could only do so much to improve the old building. But turn those rough walls into a canvas and illuminate them, and it becomes a painting worth stepping into.

I know it’s closed right now, though. Their next event is in a couple of weeks, so it doesn’t make sense when Luuk stops in front of the door and knocks. It makes even less sense when a flustered twenty-year old opens it.

‘Good evening, Mr Meiers. Everything is ready.’

‘What’s going on?’

Luke seems thrilled at my impatience. ‘You’ll see. First, I need you to close your eyes.’

My eyes do exactly the opposite; they dart open. ‘Why?’

‘Do you trust me?’

I laugh. ‘You should know this by now.’

‘Eyes closed then, no cheating.’

He takes my hand, and I could follow him to the end of the Earth like this—eyes closed, palms clasped together, his breath warming my ear.

Is it normal to feel wet heat between my legs or just a pathetic sign of a sex-deprived single mom?
