“Daddy, I’s hungwy.”
“I’m sorry, buddy. We missed lunch, didn’t we?”
“You do seem to be in front of a restaurant,” Macy suggested.
In my emotional overload, I hadn’t even realized that we were outside of a very Bavarian-themed restaurant with a dog that looked a lot like Ozzy on the sign, which meant that Owen would probably be down with eating there.
“Well, that was easy enough,” I remarked.
“And I own it,” Mina piped up with a smile.
My brows shot up in surprise. “You do?”
Sweeping her hands to her hips, Mina countered, “Why do you seem so surprised?”
“I thought you were just a tourist dressed like that or a waitress.”
“Just a waitress?” Mina implored.
Fuck. I’d really managed to put my foot in my mouth this time. While Cal and Macy chuckled, heat rose in my cheeks. “I do believe you’re blushin’, sir,” Macy joked.
“I’m pretty sure it’s from all the exertion from trying to find Owen.”
“Sure it is,” Cal mused.
I threw my hands up. “Fine. I’m embarrassed. In fact, I’m fucking mortified that I just insulted the woman who helped find my kid.”
“Once again, I’m more of a co-conspirator than a hero.”
“Whatever,” I laughed. Turning to Mina, I said, “And for the record, I’m not some misogynistic douchebag who doesn’t think women can be entrepreneurs. My mom owns her own real estate company.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” Mina replied good-naturedly.
Owen bounced on the balls of his feet. “Can Ozzy eats wif us?”
Putting two and two together, I realized that Ozzy was the dog on the sign. “I would love to have him join us,” I said to Mina.
“Ozzy isn’t allowed in the dining room,” she replied, which caused Owen to cease bouncing.
Frowning, he said, “He’s not?”
Mina shook her head. “But if you’d like to eat on the terrace, he can join you there.”
“Yeah!” Owen cried, dancing around again, which caused Ozzy to bark and wag his tail like a helicopter. Mina and I laughed at his antics.
“Well, I’d say it’s more than fair for me to patronize your restaurant considering I insulted you.”
“I would agree,” Mina replied.
Nodding at Cal and Macy, I asked, “Would you guys like to join me?”
As Cal opened his mouth to respond, Macy quickly replied, “Oh no. We’re still stuffed from lunch.” Giving him a pointed look, Macy countered, “Aren’t we, babe?”
From Cal’s expression, I knew it wouldn’t have bothered him to have an appetizer or dessert, especially since Owen going missing had cut his stop at the bakery short. I’d never seen someone consume so much food even out of season. But when he got his wife’s meaning, he quickly nodded in agreement.
Rubbing his belly, he said, “I’m as stuffed as a tick.”
“What about the tubing?”
