Rory’s expression softened. “You’re in a very vulnerable place after what happened today.”

“Trust me, I’m aware of that.” With a sigh, I asked, “So what do I do? Serve them their drinks and then disappear?”

“Just be careful.”

I groaned. “Like I’m capable of that.” When I saw Casey returning from the terrace, I knew I had to snap out of it. “I gotta go.”

“Good luck.”

“Seriously?” I countered.

“Okay, then. Use your head, not your heart or your hoo-hah.”

Snorting, I replied, “That should be embroidered on a throw pillow.”

With a wink, she said, “You know I’m more of a crochet gal.”

I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before heading to the kitchen. After preparing the drinks, I grabbed the tray and headed to the terrace. When I reached the door, I drew in a breath. “Use your head, not your heart or hoo-oh,” I reiterated to myself.

Feeling strong, I stepped outside. I strode down the flagstone feeling strong in my convictions.

And then Gavin smiled, and that damn dimple ruined everything.

“You know, when I suggested eating here, I never imagined being served by the owner.”

“Well, I never imagined meeting a professional hockey player.”

“I’m sure you have, you just didn’t realize it at the time.” A sexy smirk curved on his lips. “You know because you don’t watch hockey.”

“I know, I know,” I replied, setting his beer stein before him.

“We’re going to have to remedy that.”

Holding up my hand, I said, “I solemnly swear to tune in to the next Atlanta Heat game.”

Gavin laughed. “While that’s a start, I was thinking more about you seeing it in person.”

OhGodOhGodOHGOD. Did he mean what I thought he did? Was he asking me on a date? “That would be really cool,” I squeaked.

He gave me a genuine smile. “Awesome.”

Needing a subject change, I motioned to the menu. “What would you two like to eat?”

“I gotta be honest. I’m completely clueless about what to order. Everything sounds so good. I can’t pronounce it, but at least it sounds good.”

I laughed. “I totally get it. German isn’t the easiest language to speak. Why don’t I make some suggestions?”

“That would be great.”

I walked past Gavin to where Owen was playing with Ozzy. Kneeling down beside him, I asked, “Do you like chicken tenders?”

“Mm, hmm.”

“What about mac and cheese?”

He furiously bobbed his head. “Yes, pwease.”

“Then I’m going to suggest you have the kinderschnitzel with a side of käsespätzl.”
