“You’ve been paying attention,” I said softly.
“To you?” He looked up like the answer was obvious. “Always.”
I looked down before he saw what that did to me.
We ate as the sun lowered somewhere behind us. Like always, conversation came easily. Saadiq complained about Yoli aggravating him during their meeting, leaving out whatever he had done to deserve it. I had seen Yoli and him in action. There was absolutely no chance he had been an innocent victim.
“She threw a folder at me,” he protested.
“Mm-hmm. What you say?”
“Why that matter?”
I scoffed. “Because I know you.”
He frowned. I patted his leg. “It’s okay, suga. What you say, though?”
“I just innocently asked if Reign was getting to know her against her will.”
I nearly choked on my shrimp. “Saadiq! For real?”
“Why, hell, yeah.”
“Oh, my God. Poor Reign.” I shook my head.
“Exactly. You know Yoli ass is something else,” he said, thinking he’d scored a point.
I glared at him. “I meant because she got both of y’all in her business.”
Saadiq waved that off. “Yoli like her.”
“I know.”
His hand stopped halfway to his mouth. “You know?”
“Please. I have eyes.”
“Reign know?”
“She got eyes, too.”
“She like her back?”
I got quiet, thinking of how to answer that. He laughed.
“Saadiq! You can’t say anything!” I warned.
“I ain’t, girl!”
“You better not.”
He gave me an amused look. “Only business I’m trying to be in is yours.”
“Well, mission accomplished on that one,” I mumbled. “But, Saadiq, for real.”
“What?”
I gestured between us. “You of all people should understand that workplace situations can get complicated.”
