“Don’t thank me yet.” A smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. “I still plan on meeting him.”

I laugh into my coffee. “Please don’t interrogate my boss.”

“If he’s as good as you think he is,” Kira says, reaching for her cup, “he’ll survive your big sister.”

I change into an oversized T-shirt, climb into bed, and prop myself against the headboard while Kira settles in the living room with the book she insists she’ll only read for half an hour before she goes to sleep too.

I bet she’ll still be there in the morning.

I plug my phone into the charger, open my messages, and type before I can overthink it.

Emma: I have good news and bad news.

Bane: Which one do you want to start with?

I smile.

Emma: My sister wants to meet you.

Bane: I’m guessing that’s the bad news.

I laugh and tuck the comforter over my legs.

Emma: She spent the day reminding me you’re my boss.

Bane: She’s looking out for you.

I pause before answering.

Emma: She thinks you’re going to break my heart or ruin my career.

Bane: Those sound like reasonable concerns.

I shake my head.

Emma: You’re taking this better than I expected.

Bane: She’s your sister. If she didn’t ask difficult questions, I’d wonder why.

The knot Kira left in my chest eases a little.

Emma: She did promise to keep an open mind.

Bane: Then I’m already doing better than I expected.

Bane: Should I be nervous?

Emma: Probably.

Bane: I’ll wear a suit.

I laugh softly.

Emma: That won’t save you.

I stare at the screen before my thumbs move.

Emma: She likes the way you make me feel. Which is a good start.
