His gaze drops to my mouth before returning to my eyes, and the distance between us no longer feels careful. It feels chosen, held in place only because neither of us has decided who will cross it first.
I should leave because it’s the responsible thing to do. I’ve spent my whole life believing that if I kept making the responsible choice, everything else would eventually fall into place. Tonight proves it doesn’t always work, yet he hasn’t tried to convince me to stay.
Maybe that’s why I can’t make myself leave. I don’t know what the responsible choice is anymore. And he hasn’t tried to charm me into staying or close the last few inches between us because he assumes he knows what I want.
My hand lifts as my fingertips brush his jaw, searching his face for something that tells me I’ve imagined all of this. Instead, I find something so achingly vulnerable that it steals the rest of my hesitation. I lean into him, his head tilted down as his eyes search mine, giving me every opportunity to change my mind. I’ve spent so much of my life trying to become someone worth choosing that I don’t think I’ve ever stopped to ask myself what I wanted, but I know I want this.
I close the last inch between us and press my lips against his. The kiss is nothing like I expected because it isn’t fueled by urgency or desperation. It’s impossibly tender, like he’s memorizing every second instead of trying to steal it, and my eyes burn before I even realize they’re filling with tears. No one has ever kissed me like they’re grateful I chose them, and when I kiss him back, it isn’t because I’ve forgotten about tomorrow. It’s because, for the first time since my world fell apart this afternoon, tomorrow isn’t the only thing that matters.
His mouth stills against mine for the briefest moment, as though he’s giving me one last chance to decide this was a mistake. I don’t pull away; my fingers tighten lightly against the back of his neck instead of letting go.
He lets out a soft huff of laughter, the sound warming the space between us until it feels impossible to remember there was ever any distance. “I’ve been trying all night not to kiss you.”
“I noticed. You’ve been looking at my mouth for at least the last twenty minutes.”
“I thought I was hiding it better than that.” A flush creeps into his cheeks, and I swear I catch him looking almost embarrassed. “I meant what I said earlier about not letting one bad day convince you that you were wrong about yourself.”
“I keep thinking about everything you’ve told me tonight. About how you’ve spent so much of your life taking care of everyone else.”
I try to answer, but he continues before I can.
“You deserve one night where someone takes care of you.”
“We don’t have to do anything else. Honestly, we don’t. But I just…” His smile turns almost shy as he glances down for a second before looking back at me. “I want to make you feel good. I want tonight to belong to you as much as it belongs to me.”
“I don’t need anything in return. If this is all we ever do, I’ll still be grateful you kissed me.”
I wait for the expectation hidden beneath his words, the moment this becomes something I have to earn, but it never comes. My fingers find his jaw again as I rise onto my toes, and this time, I don’t hesitate. And when I kiss him, it isn’t out of gratitude or obligation. It’s because I want to.
His mouth meets mine with a quiet sound that almost disappears between us, one arm slipping around my waist as though he’s afraid moving too quickly might break whatever fragile thing we’ve found together. The kiss lingers, deepening a little at a time until I can’t remember where one breath ends and the next begins. Every time I lean closer, he follows just enough to meet me there, never asking me to become anyone but myself.
When we finally draw apart, his forehead settles against mine again as he whispers, “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
His smile changes when I say it, the shyness melting away into something warmer and more certain, like dawn breaking over a quiet horizon. His thumb strokes slowly beneath my ear, his expression softening as though he’s seeing something he hoped I’d finally let him see.
“There you are,” he murmurs as his strong hands lift me effortlessly onto the kitchen island until we’re finally eye to eye. I spread my knees as he drags the fabric of my skirt up my legs, his fingers caressing softly against my bare skin before he steps between them.
“That’s better. Now I don’t have to watch you stretch every time you want to kiss me.” He huffs a rough laugh against my cheekbone as he trails wet kisses down my neck before pulling my nipple into his mouth through my shirt.
“Fuck,” I hiss as his eyes sweep up toward mine as he sucks, using his other hand to knead my other breast in his palm.
A slow smile curves his mouth when the sound slips free. “That’s my good girl.”
Good has always been something I earned after the test was over, after the grade came back, after I’d proved myself one more time. He’s looking at me as though existing exactly as I am is enough, and I don’t know how to hold something that gentle.
“These fucking chains have been driving me insane all night,” he groans against my skin, tugging the belly chain I forgot I put on this morning to complete the outfit.
“Don’t break it,” I whine as his hand slides around my waist, finding the clasp on my chain and unclipping it.
“Never. This thing is going to live in my dreams for the rest of my life. I can’t wait to see you wearing it and nothing else,” he says with conviction, as if there will be a next time. “So fucking beautiful.”
Beautiful has never been a word I’ve known how to wear. I’ve spent years chasing good grades and impossible expectations because achievements were easier to believe than compliments. For one instinctive moment, I almost dismiss his words as another kindness offered by a man who knows exactly what a woman wants to hear. Then I look at him, and every doubt loses its footing because there isn’t a trace of performance in his expression. He’s not trying to convince me of anything or fill the silence with pretty promises. He’s looking at me as if he’s still trying to understand how we found each other tonight, and I let myself believe that beautiful is simply what he sees when he looks at me. None of this changes what happens when morning comes, but that no longer feels like a reason to hold myself back. If tonight is all we ever have, I don’t want to spend another second performing for someone who has done nothing except ask me to be myself.
Pleasure flutters through my body as he drops to his knees, pressing a light kiss against the inside of my left knee before nipping and sucking his way up my thigh toward my pussy.
“Fuck, you smell goddamn delicious, baby.”
