In Darkness We Claim

I look over at Bram, who is no longer laughing like a crazy person, and is instead assessing Kincaid in a way that scares me just as much. I push through the frozen guards and grab his arm, ignoring the blood covering him—which appears to be from other people.

Bram has a minor cut above his eye, redness that I’m sure will escalate to bruising over one cheek, and his lip is cut enough to still be dripping blood. But other than that, he came out of the fight relatively unscathed, from what I can see.

“What the hell happened?” I hiss in his ear as I pull him away from security, heading back to our booth, where I left the girls.

We only make it a few steps before Kincaid cuts in front of us, halting our movement. “Yes, I’d very much like to hear what happened, too.” Although he sounds cold and distant, the threat in his tone is more than evident.

Bram, clearly not valuing his life at all tonight, glares at Kincaid. “Your fucking security staff put their hands on an innocent girl, and I sure as fuck wasn’t going to allow them to manhandle her.”

Kincaid’s eyes narrow as he assesses Bram, trying to work out if he’s telling the truth or not. “Which girl?”

Bram looks at me, and I incline my head towards the booth, where the girls are sitting, huddled together, looking absolutely fucking terrified. Kincaid spins on his heel and heads straight towards them, me and Bram running behind.

Kincaid ignores us as his gaze flicks between Wren and Harper, taking them both in. I want to throw myself in front of Harper, to stop Kincaid from being able to look at her, hating the way she seems to shrink under the weight of his stare.

“Tell me what happened. What did my men do?”

Harper remains silent, and I can’t help but notice she’s shivering—though it’s not clear if it’s from cold or fear. Either way, I want to wrap my arms around her and show her she has nothing to be afraid of.

Well, except me, I think to myself.

Wren clears her throat before holding her head high, trying to project an air of confidence that she clearly doesn’t feel. “We were trying to get into the VIP section, as Harper wanted to talk to Lawson, but your security guards wouldn’t let us in. They said our names weren’t on the list, and that was final.

“I started shouting Lawson’s name to get his attention, and your man didn’t like that. He said I was causing a scene and that I needed to leave. When I said no, he grabbed hold of me and pushed me.”

“Did he hurt you?” Bram asks through gritted teeth, his whole body practically vibrating with rage.

I watch him slowly drag his gaze over Wren’s body, no doubt looking for any injuries in case she doesn’t tell him the truth. She holds out her arms, twisting them slightly. “Nothing major. I’ll probably just have some bruises in the morning from where he grabbed me.”

“I’m going to kill him,” Bram seethes, before turning his attention to Kincaid, who looks equally murderous.

“I’m sorry a member of my staff put their hands on you. I’ll make sure they’re punished, and that it never happens again,” Kincaid states, ever the professional.

Harper leans forward, her words rushing out quicker than normal, no doubt thanks to the adrenaline coursing through her. “It was partly our fault. We were trying to get into the VIP section without permission, so we’re sorry for that.”

I glare at the beautiful strawberry-blonde, wondering why the hell she’s sticking up for the man who laid his hands on her friend. She meets my gaze, but instead of shying away like she normally does, she lifts her head slightly in challenge.

“Thank you for saying that,” Kincaid replies. “But that’s still no excuse. He shouldn’t have touched you the way he did. I’ll review the security footage before I make my decision on what happens next.”

“Are we in trouble?” Wren asks, her voice shaking.

Kincaid shakes his head slowly. “No, but I will ask you not to cause another commotion in my club.”

Wren nods rapidly, a small smile on her face. “I promise, we won’t.” She pauses for a second, her gaze flicking to Bram before quickly landing back on Kincaid. “What about him?”

Bram’s lips curl into a wide, cocky grin as he winks at Wren. “Aww, you worried about me, little fighter?”

Her eyes narrow as she glares at Bram, but it’s impossible to miss the flush spreading across her cheeks. “Fuck no,” she replies quickly, but I’d put money on that being a lie.

Kincaid lets out a brief chuckle, his eyes lighting up as he stares at Wren. For just a moment, I wonder whether I should be concerned that both Bram and Kincaid appear to be checking out Wren, but I quickly push those thoughts aside. I have enough shit to worry about.

“This is your one free pass, Bram. No more fighting in my club. Keep it for your sanctioned fights. Understood?”

Bram stares down Kincaid for a second before giving him a sharp nod. “Fine. But I’d like to view the security footage to see who hurt Wren.”

I let out a low groan as I shake my head in despair. “Can’t you just let Kincaid handle it?”

Bram glares at me. “Fuck, no.”
