For some reason, that just pisses me off.
Dax sits and leans to the side to pull a laptop from his bag. Every few seconds, he flexes the fingers of his right hand. It’s obviously finished healing, so why the hell is he flexing it so often?
I don’t even think he realizes he’s doing it.
The door opens, and Silas walks in. He looks haggard, with his hair pulled messily back and at least three days’ worth of growth he hasn’t bothered to shave. His eyes are glassy and red, with deep purple bruises.
When he sees me, he stops dead in his tracks and whispers, “Caelan.”
I nod in greeting, and frown when his shoulders slump. When he gets to the table, he pulls out the chair across from me and falls into it, looking for all the world like a male on death row.
I turn toward Gav and ask, “Who are we waiting for?”
“Me. And probably this bloke as well,” A feminine voice that is definitely not my Mate answers, and I spin in my chair as the door swings shut behind a human Omega.
What the hell is an Omega doing here?
There’s no denying how beautiful she is, with tan skin, thick, black hair, a mischievous smile, and dark eyes that twinkle like she’s in on a joke the universe chose to share only with her.
What’s most unique, though, is her accent.
She crosses the room like she’s been here a thousand times and takes a seat across from my Pack, leaving a few chairs between her and Silas.
Right behind the Omega is Riven, who takes a seat next to her and shoots me a grin.
They must have come together. Maybe they’re friends… or…
Does Riven have human friends?
“You look much better than the last time I saw you,” Riven observes, placing a bundle of leather-bound books on the table in front of him and unbuttoning his suit jacket.
“I feel much better,” I answer before gesturing toward the Omega with a nod. “Who’s this?”
“What?” Riven frowns, then follows my gaze and shrugs. “I have no idea. We just met in the hall—”
“We’ll get to introductions later.” Gav interrupts.
The Omega rolls her eyes, then turns, studying me openly. I’m about to tell her to stop when she grins and nods decisively, like she’s come to some kind of conclusion. She pulls out her phone and bends over the device, typing furiously.
Not once does she stop smiling.
Where the fuck is Idril?
Totally oblivious to my growing need, Gav clears his throat and announces, “We have a lot to discuss. A lot has happened in the past two weeks, and I know I speak for everyone when I say,” his eyes land on me, “we are so fucking happy to have you back with us, brother.”
I grunt in thanks, ignoring Vae when he lets out an excited whoop while trying not to shrug off Daxen’s hand when it claps down on my shoulder.
I hate them. I really, truly, hate them right now.
“Ford and Evander are returning from Chicago in a few days, and with everyone finally back under the same roof, we need a game plan moving forward,” Gav continues.
“We need to lay out all the pieces and see how they fit, and we need to start acting instead of reacting. If we don’t, I’m not sure how long we can stay ahead of this shit. We have to make finding those missing Omegas—and Varenthrall—our top priority.”
He leans in, resting his forearms on the table. “The first order of business is the Omega prisoner.”
Adrenaline surges through my veins, and I sit up straighter, squaring my shoulders.
“Get her,” I demand, and somehow I manage to keep my voice steady even though my stomach is churning and my nerve endings feel like they’re firing off lightning beneath my skin.
