I nod.

“When? Tonight? Like just now?”

Something about the look in Caelan’s eyes puts me even further on edge. “Yes, just now.”

With a curse, he grabs me by the arm and takes off down the hall, dragging me with him. I stumble after him, so shocked by the abrupt turn that it takes until we’re halfway down the hall for my brain to catch up.

“What the hell? What’s wrong?”

I yank my arm free twice before breaking away.

“What’s with the urgency all of a sudden? Talk to me, man. Tell me what’s going on, and I’ll help you. But you have to use your words. You can’t just drag me around like a caveman in the middle of the night.”

He glares at me, then quickly realizes it’s probably easier to explain, and throws his hands up in defeat. “Something’s wrong!”

“What do you mean something’s wrong?”

“I mean… Something. Is. wrong,” he growls, aggressively biting off each word. “Soren and I both woke up like twenty minutes ago. At the same time. And we could just… feel it.” His hand lifts to his chest, curling into a fist which he pounds against his sternum for emphasis. “We felt it here. Right. Here.”

“You mean with… Idril?”

He gives me a flat look which… okay. That’s fair.

“Alright…” I heave out a breath, planting my hands on my hips. “So you came to get me.”

He nods.

“Where’s Soren?”

“Right here.”

The wolven’s voice reaches us right before he rounds the corner and into the hall. To my relief, Vae appears as well, trailing after him, both sporting frowns identical to Caelan’s.

When Caelan turns to the wolven, his eyes soften, and he lets out a breath of relief. A pang of jealousy hits me like a battering ram.

“Oh good,” I drawl. “We’re all here. Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on?”

Vae frowns at my tone, and at this point I have to wonder if I’m in permanent self-destruct mode or if I just hate myself.

“Well, I found this one outside,” Soren announces, throwing a thumb over his shoulder toward Vae. “Pacing at the tree line.”

Vae shrugs, and a sheepish smile appears on his face.

This motherfucker, I swear to the gods… if there’s a delivery coming from John Deere, I will literally set him on fire.

Caelan turns to Vae, and the look in his eyes is nothing short of desperate. “You can feel it too, can’t you?”

“Caelan…” Soren’s tone is thick with warning, throwing every one of my instincts into overdrive.

“I know,” Caelan snaps, then turns back to Vae and demands, “Tell me why you were outside.”

“I just… I felt like something was wrong,” he admits in a low voice, like it’s not something he should be saying out loud.

“I did too,” I admit, before adding hastily, “I don’t know if it has something to do with Idril, but something’s… off. And if all of us are feeling—”

“Let’s go.”

The words barely leave Soren’s mouth before we spring into action.
