“That won’t be a problem.” Idonea wondered if they had something like a grimoire for Resonants.
Kitsa put her teacup down. “You want to try the same as yesterday?”
Idonea nodded. “But how do you attune yourself to another?”
“If you don’t know them, then you have to visualise them, or have a part of them,” Kitsa said, dropping from the chair and crossing her legs on the rug.
Kitsa looked over at Lysander. “Try with him.”
He arched a brow in response, but stayed silent.
Idonea wanted to try to connect to Nellith, but she supposed some practice wouldn’t hurt. She pressed her hands down onto the floor beside her. “And?”
“Then,” Kitsa said, leaning closer, “you watch the surrounding Current. Every person has a different tone, a different vibration. The Current reflects that. You don’t tug it. You don’t command it. You listen to it.”
She pressed two fingers to Idonea’s sternum. “When it aligns, you’ll feel a second beat here. Like a faint echo of his heartbeat overlapping yours. If the attunement holds, that beat stays with you until you release it.”
Idonea took a deep breath, letting her eyes slit and fall into pure Current Sight. Kitsa sucked in a breath. Even seeing it before didn’t lessen the impact it had.
Idonea’s perception shifted. The chamber dimmed, its edges blurring into a soft silver haze. Air thickened as if woven with threads she could brush aside with her hands. She exhaled, letting herself slip farther into the Current’s luminosity.
A hum vibrated through her bones as Current shimmered in the space. The world around her bent. Lysander came apart into threads of light.
She recoiled. The resonance called to her. Careful not to pull, or force the Current, she aligned each breath with each pulse from his rhythm. Her heart stuttered, steadied, then aligned.
Her fingers twitched against the rug. A hazy ringing filled her ears. The light from his resonance brightened until it prickled against her vision.
She let her own Current unfurl like a hand reaching towards another flame. The moment the threads touched hers, the air tightened.
Idonea gasped. A second heartbeat fluttered beneath her sternum. A resonance not her own pulsed through her veins.
Idonea pressed a hand to her chest.
Kitsa broke into a wide grin. “You did it.”
Idonea stood, steadying herself against the chair while her eyes and nails resumed normality. The thump in her chest unsettled her. Lysander’s gaze met hers, his face unreadable.
Hoping it was as easy as Kitsa said, Idonea walked over to his position.
The secondary thrum beat faster, her own pulse answering.
She stepped right up to him, toe to toe. She tilted her head to look at him.
The secondary beat faded, quieting in her chest.
“Well?” Kitsa’s voice cut through the silence.
Lysander cleared his throat.
Idonea stepped back, turning to face her. “That’s impressive.”
Kitsa sat back up on the chair. “That’s the easier form of attunement, but well done.”
Instead of returning to the rug, Idonea went over to the books. She brushed her fingers over the spines, taking in the titles.
“I better be going,” Kitsa said from behind.
Idonea nodded, “Thanks again.”
