When she turns to look behind her, I dart out, then hurry ahead.
I look in the reflection of the window I pass.
She spots me. Her entire face lights up.
Fuck.
This is ridiculous. I'm helping a woman stalk me.
Bishop would kill me. Beck would never let me live it down. Which means neither of them can ever find out.
I keep walking.
She’s still following me, convinced I don’t know she’s behind me.
I should be annoyed. But I'm not.
That's probably the bigger problem.
I make it another block, then check again.
Nothing.
Hmmm.
I keep walking.
At the next window, I check again.
Still nothing.
I slow.
Maybe she finally gave up.
It’s for the best.
I take another step... then stop.
Fuck.
I turn around. She’s still not behind me.
It takes less than a minute to retrace my route.
No Callie.
Then I catch a flash of dark hair near an alley.
My instincts sharpen.
I cross the street.
Callie disappears between two buildings.
My hand moves automatically beneath my jacket.
I quietly follow, staying far enough back that she won't hear or see me.
