“She has a Zoom meeting with an author. Just grab my spare key and take an Uber to Bramble. I’ll transfer cash for the trip. Plus extra for a coffee.”
“This sounds too good to be true.”
I roll my eyes, still watching for Roman. “Stop being so suspicious. I’ll give you money for the Uber home.”
“So I get coffee and I get to drive your vehicle?”
“Yes, Drew.”
“This sounds suspicious. What’s the catch?”
“No catch.” I swallow hard, ignoring the urge to call him a nickname. Or to make up a new one. Diary of a Wimpy Drew comes to mind. “I just need a favor.”
“You’re not wanted by the police or anything, are you?” He practically whispers. “Or have any bodies in the trunk?”
I’d like to have Roman’s body in the trunk. But then, Drew wouldn’t be driving him.
“No, nothing like that. I just need you to get my vehicle while I walk Alibi.”
Alibi’s ear flops as his head whips to mine. I press my finger against my lips, asking him to be quiet. He obviously knows the word walk. It makes my heart hurt that someone abandoned him.
“Oh, okay.”
“Great. So—”
“How do you have Alibi but not your vehicle?”
Shit. I close my eyes. Drew is exhausting. How the hell does Violet deal with him?
“Drew. Just—"
“Nope. Don’t tell me. The less I know, the better.”
“Uh-huh. Don’t want you in witness protection.” Sarcasm laces every word. My fingers move across the screen. “I just transferred money to you.”
“Witness protection!” he screeches. “What do you mean… Holy shit! Do I get to keep the extra?”
I knew extra money would shut him up. He’s an accountant who watches every penny.
“Yes, Drew. Keep the extra.”
“I’m on it. I’ll text you when your car is in your garage.”
“Thanks. And Drew?” I smile. “Don’t get any speeding tickets.”
He mumbles some curses and something that sounds like “I never speed,” then hangs up.
I’ve already forgotten about Drew.
Beside me, Alibi sneezes.
I gently scratch his ears. “You okay?”
His tail thumps against the passenger seat.
“We learn from our mistakes.”
He pants.
