Sonofabitch. He found the AirTag.
Roman looks down at the object in his hand, then slowly smiles.
Oh, fuck.
His head lifts.
I drop so fast my sunglasses nearly fly off.
Alibi lifts his head slightly, then licks my face.
“Don’t sit up,” I whisper. “This is a covert operation.”
He stays put, his panting loud in the car.
“Good boy.”
I slowly count down from fifty, then I peek over the steering wheel.
Shit. He’s still there.
I duck again.
“Don’t move,” I whisper to Alibi.
His tail thumps against the seat.
“That includes your tail.”
I wait another minute, then carefully peek again. Roman is farther across the parking lot now, scanning the cars.
Holy shit. He’s actually looking for me.
I sink back down.
We wait.
And wait.
Until finally, I hear a truck engine start.
I give it another thirty seconds, then look again.
He’s gone.
I slowly sit up. “He didn’t find us.”
Alibi pants happily.
A grin spreads across my face. “He found the AirTag. But he didn’t find us.”
I gently scratch behind his ear.
“I’m calling that progress.”
Then I put the car in reverse.
“Next time, we’ll find his house.”
