Weirdly, his arm wrapped around me as he was falling.

I can’t move.

Not that I mind.

He’s big, solid, and warm. Like a giant muscled teddy bear who refuses to smile. Although I coaxed one out of him earlier.

I snuggle against him, my ear against his chest, breathing him in. He smells like sandalwood, leather, and a hint of smoke.

Delicious.

I could smell him every day and never get tired of it.

Lulled by his steady breathing, my eyes grow heavy.

The last thing I remember before I drift off is how natural it feels to be in his arms. So right.

I feel like I’m on a boat.

No, that’s not right.

Boats aren’t this warm.

Unless I’m lying in the sun.

My eyes slowly open.

And then he comes into focus.

A smile curls my lips. “Hello, sexy hitman.”

He freezes, his eyes locking with mine.

They aren’t just brown. They’re whiskey brown, threaded with amber that catches the light.

Even his eyeballs are hot.

“I didn’t mean to wake you.”

I tense. “You were going to try and sneak out, weren’t you?”

He looks uncomfortable. “Nothing personal.”

“Isn’t it?” I sit up, straddling him. Anger threads through my veins. “I helped you to my car. Risked you bleeding on my seat—”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

My eyes narrow. “So you’re saying I should’ve just let you stumble around bleeding by the woods until you passed out?”

His brows furrow. “I wasn’t going to bleed out.”

“Ha! That patch job you did was terrible. Slapping bandages on a wound that needs stitches doesn’t work.”

“I did the best I could with what I had.”

“Did you even clean it?”

“Yes.”
