My heart stops.
He’s close.
I don't breathe.
Maybe he won’t notice me if I don’t move.
A shadow moves into the kitchen, and then the light comes on.
Roman stands there, his gun raised, pointed directly at me.
I stop breathing.
His expression changes. I catch a flicker of shock before he masks it.
I put my hands up, not knowing what else to do.
“Callie.”
“Hi.”
He lowers the gun.
I smile weakly. “How’s it going?”
His eyes narrow. “You’re in my fucking house.”
“Right.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Reconnaissance?”
His jaw flexes. “Reconnaissance.”
“Mmm-hmm.”
“Why the hell are you by my fridge?”
“I fell.”
He stares. “You fell.”
I nod. “Trying to escape.”
“How the hell did you get in here?”
Oh, boy. I don’t want to tell him.
For once, I’m speechless, my mind racing.
His brows draw in. “Are you alone?”
“Yes. Unless you count Alibi.”
He looks around. “The dog?”
I nod. “He’s in my car. Watching Scooby.”
