“Fuck you.”

Bishop exhales. “Did Mercer follow her?”

“No. I watched until she was gone. He's moving now.”

“Then stay on him.”

My gaze tracks Mercer as he disappears around the next corner.

“He looked in the direction she left.”

“That doesn't mean anything.”

“With Mercer?”

Another pause.

“No,” Bishop finally says. “It doesn't.”

“She's already connected to me if he saw enough.”

“Maybe.”

“I don't work with maybe.”

“You work with what you know.”

“And what I know is Mercer notices people. He noticed her twice.”

“Then assume he remembers her.”

I already am.

“Anything new on Smoke?”

“No.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing useful. Whoever he is, he's either very good at disappearing or nobody knows where the hell he is.”

I scan the sidewalk before crossing. “And the information?”

“Still don't know what he has.”

“That's becoming a problem.”

“It was a problem before Mercer walked into your girlfriend's coffee shop.”

“She isn't my girlfriend.”

Bishop is silent.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Don't.”
