I turn.
Violet catches my arm. “Roman.”
I look down at her hand, then at her.
“Find my sister.”
There's no hesitation.
“I will.”
Bishop is waiting beside my truck. His man has a tablet open.
“Vehicle went north,” Bishop says.
“How far?”
“We have it on three cameras after it left Hollow Creek. Last confirmed image is twelve minutes north.”
“Then?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“The road splits. One direction has county cameras. The other doesn't.”
“Which direction doesn't?”
Bishop's mouth tightens.
I already know. “Blackridge.”
Bishop nods.
“Call the house.”
He pulls out his phone.
A few seconds later, Smoke's voice comes through the speaker. “Did you find her?”
“No,” I say.
Silence.
Then, “What do you need?”
“Mercer took a dark SUV north out of Hollow Creek. We lost him on the roads heading toward Blackridge.”
“What road?”
Bishop's man gives me the intersection. I repeat it.
Smoke goes quiet.
“Smoke.”
“I'm thinking.”
