Callie slowly looks between us, then shakes her head. “Too much alike,” she mutters.
Smoke stands.
I walk into the kitchen. Smoke follows me.
I open the refrigerator. “Water?”
Smoke nods.
I grab a bottle, then glance at Callie. Her coffee is almost gone.
“You want water?”
“No.”
“You need water.”
“Then why did you ask?” She smiles sweetly.
I grab another bottle.
When I turn around, Smoke is watching me.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
I bring the water over and set it beside Callie. “Drink it.”
“Yes, Dad.”
Smoke makes a sound.
Fuck my life.
I sit in the chair beside the couch. Smoke takes the other one.
For a minute, it's quiet.
Callie drinks her water. Mostly because I'm staring at her.
Alibi falls asleep with his nose pressed against her thigh.
Smoke watches them.
Then me.
“What?” I ask.
Smoke leans back.
My eyes stay on him. “You came here for something.”
His jaw moves. Then he exhales. “Yeah.”
Callie lowers the water bottle.
Smoke rubs a hand over his beard. “I have a confession.”
