BECK: No idea. Didn’t exactly stop and introduce myself.
I stare at the screen.
ME: Stay away from her.
The second I send it, I regret it.
BECK: LOL. Possessive.
Fuck. He’ll never let me live this down.
ME: Fuck you.
I toss the phone on the couch.
Callie's none of my business. She can do whatever she wants. With whoever she wants.
I stare at the phone. My jaw aches from clenching it.
I fucking hate Halloween.
By ten thirty, I've cleaned my gun. It didn’t need cleaning, but I have nothing better to do.
I walk the perimeter inside the cabin, then outside.
Everything is calm and still.
When I come back inside, I check the cabin locks. All are secure.
I check my phone. Nothing from Beck.
Good. I don't want to hear from him.
I open the refrigerator again. Still the same fucking food.
I make a sandwich and eat half of it standing over the sink.
The action movie ended at some point. Now there's another horror movie playing. A woman is running through the woods while a masked man chases her.
I stop chewing.
For fuck's sake.
I change the channel.
A commercial shows a couple dressed like vampires, kissing.
Next.
A Halloween party.
Next.
Another fucking cat.
I turn the television off.
Silence fills the cabin. Somehow, that's worse.
