“Callie must’ve done a decent job.” He grins. “You’re alive.”
I snort and take a long drink of water to avoid talking.
The silence stretches between us.
“I knew you’d be pissed I told Bishop.”
I grunt. “I called him right after you dropped me off.”
Beck raises his brows and stares at me.
“Okay, maybe it was a few minutes later.”
“Ten minutes after I hung up with him.”
I stare at him.
“Call logs, Hot Lips.”
“Fucker. I’m still pissed at you.”
“I can make it up to you.”
“Doubtful.”
He shrugs. “When I was in town getting you some groceries, some older lady bumped into me. She asked if I knew a tall guy with dark hair who looked pissed off.”
I go still.
“An old lady asked that?”
“She said she was trying to help a woman find her boyfriend.”
My pulse kicks. “What woman?”
Beck stares at me, a smug smile curling his lips.
Fuck.
“Some blonde woman.”
That could be anyone. Hollow Creek probably has hundreds of blonde women.
And I’m not Callie’s boyfriend.
“What did the old woman look like?”
Beck starts laughing.
Fuck.
Rookie mistake.
I just told him exactly how much I care.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
