“He sold the place, with no warning.”
“Bastard.”
“Yep.”
“What else? There’s something you’re not telling me.”
Milo sighed. “I suggested she and Caleb…”
“You didn’t.”
“I did.”
“And?”
He shrugged. “We haven’t talked about it since.”
“Well, she didn’t say no.”
Chapter thirteen
“Not a fan of pink?”
When Milo arrived home on Wednesday, Mathias’ truck was parked in front of the house. Mathias got out and walked over to Milo as he got out of his car.
“I thought you left for Boise.”
“Not yet. I’m going on Sunday. I wanted to spend one more week with Wilda and Caleb before I leave them to fend for themselves.”
“It seems Wilda is capable of taking care of herself and Caleb.”
“She is.”
“So, what brings you out here?”
“I wanted to talk to you for a minute if you’ve got time.”
“I’ve got time.” He headed for the porch. “Do you mind if we sit out here? I’d like to give Frenchie a run.”
Mathias sat in a chair.
“Can I get you a beer or something?”
“No, I’m good, thanks.”
Milo sat in the other chair. “What’s on your mind?”
“Wilda told me about your offer to move in here.”
“She hasn’t confirmed one way or another.” Milo cocked his head. “Do you have an issue with it?”
“It depends on your motives.”
“I have no motives. No agenda. It’s a big, empty house. She needs a place to stay.”
“So you're not hoping that…”
“No.”
