The handle moves again.
Quinn’s eyes snap to mine.
For several seconds, neither of us breathes.
Then footsteps move away.
I drop my forehead against hers. “Okay.”
Her chest rises and falls against mine. “Okay what?”
“We’re done.”
“We are?”
I pull back enough to look at her. She actually sounds disappointed.
“Your dad is thirty yards away.”
“You knew that when you came in.”
“I was temporarily distracted.”
She smiles. “Fair. I think I was too.”
I smooth my hands down her sides one last time before forcing myself to let go. Quinn fixes her shirt, then reaches up and straightens my collar.
“You go first.”
“Why?”
“Because if he catches us, I’m his daughter.”
“And?”
“He has to keep loving me.”
I stare at her. “You’re sacrificing me, Peachy? Good to know where I stand with you.”
I make a joke of it, but honestly, I don’t mind. I’ll always do everything in my power to protect this woman.
She laughs quietly, then catches my shirt before I can step away and kisses me again, just once.
It still takes me a second to remember where we are when she pulls back.
“I’m going to miss you,” she says.
And this is exactly what I felt in this bathroom. this warm feeling between is that is pulled like a string between us, connecting us that is more than just liking or more than just sex. It is something different entirely.
“I’m going to miss you too.”
For a second, neither of us moves. Then I force myself to step away.
I make myself open the door, checking the concourse before stepping out. Nobody’s looking in my direction. More importantly, no Coach Brennan.
I walk back toward the gate at what I hope is a completely normal pace, even though my pulse is still hammering and all I can think about is Quinn standing alone in that bathroom looking as thoroughly kissed as I probably do.
By the time I get back, boarding has started.
