Something shifts in my chest. “What does that mean?”
“It means I know you, Wyatt.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning you flirt with everyone. You hook up with women you barely know, and then you move on, and that's fine.” She lifts one shoulder. “Seriously. Do whatever you want. But I don't do that.”
“I wasn't asking you to hook up with me.”
“You were trying to kiss me.”
“Yeah. Because I wanted to kiss you.”
“That’s exactly what I mean.” Frustration creeps into her voice. “You wanted to, so you did. But I’m not into that.”
My jaw tightens. “This is different.”
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
She waits, apparently expecting me to elaborate.
Fuck if I know how.
I just know I’ve been thinking about Quinn Brennan for longer than I care to admit. Even before today, she’s always been there in the back of my mind as a possibility. A someday.
She’s the kind of woman I could see myself settling down for when I’m finally ready to settle down. The kind I could build something real with. Maybe even have a family with someday.
Which is fucking insane considering I haven’t even managed to kiss her twice.
But how the hell am I supposed to find out if she could actually be that woman without kissing her first?
I’m definitely not about to tell her any of this while she’s looking at me like I just proved some terrible theory she has about me.
Quinn shakes her head. “I don't want to be another girl you kiss because she's standing in front of you and you're in the mood.”
My half-smile disappears.
Is that really what she thinks?
“That’s not what you are.”
“Then what am I?”
The question comes fast.
So does the silence afterward.
Her eyes stay on mine, waiting.
And for once in my life, I've got absolutely fucking nothing.
Because Coach Brennan's daughter probably isn't the answer she's looking for.
Neither is Riley's friend.
And the girl who's been hanging around in the back of my mind as someone I could maybe have a whole fucking life with someday sounds insane even inside my own head.
