Court of Fury

“What the fuck is it?” Kitt mutters out loud.

“Nothing we know,” I reply just as the screeching grows closer, and I realise it’s a word, not mindless noise.

A name, actually.

Her name.

Ferol.

Turning my head, I meet her gaze as she stares, shocked at the approaching shadow. “What the fuck is that thing?” I ask her.

Her eyes linger on it before she glances at us.

“Someone who will not stop until we are all dead. We need to move now.” The panic in her voice has me tensing up.

“We can take it,” Raiden scoffs.

“No, you can’t.” She actually looks worried as she steps back. “He will kill all of us.” Running inside, she reaches into her bag before waking Torrin, and we have no choice but to follow. We hurry out the back, that scream following us across the mountain.

We run at breakneck speed, Torrin held between Bram and Kitt. She glances behind us, her eyes hard, but there’s fear in her gaze.

“Where the fuck is it from?” I ask.

“Gehenna,” is all she says.

“Why? How?” I hiss, panting as I keep up.

“Someone let him out,” she replies.

“Why?” Raiden snaps, glancing behind us before gritting his teeth at whatever he sees.

“To make sure I’m dead. I guess whoever hired you doesn’t trust you as much as they said.”

Fuck.

CHAPTER

SIXTEEN

We don’t stop moving until we get down the mountain and past a few lodges that are inhabited. There, we find a minivan, and Kitt and Raiden work together to get in and start it, and then we are on the move once more. Torrin groans in pain, lying in the boot, while we scrunch into the back seats. Glancing out the window, I search for signs of him, but I don’t see anything but darkness and trees. Surely he’s not fast enough to keep up with an engine?

He was obviously following our trail somehow, but hopefully the vehicle will throw him off. At least, I hope so because if he finds us again, we are done for. That’s why I didn’t kill him back then. I couldn’t, no matter how hard I tried. Like me, he is unkillable. I suppose no being is truly unkillable, though. It’s just about finding the right method. Unfortunately for me, I never could, so I locked him away to suffer and go mad.

“What the fuck was that thing?” Kitt asks as he looks at me. Now is not the time for lies or games.

“More of a beast than a man now. He barely thinks, just functions with one thought—kill me.” It’s the truth. The last time I went down to see him, he was crazed, clawing at himself and the walls while screaming my name. That was a year ago, so I can’t imagine he’s gotten any saner.

“Brilliant. Why?” Raiden asks from the driver’s seat.

I shrug. I won’t tell them anything else. It’s my past, not theirs, and they don’t seem inclined to share why someone is sending monsters after them.

“Fine,” Kitt snarls, glancing back at Bram and Emrys, who’s tending to Torrin. “How do we kill it?”

“You can’t. You cannot kill a god. That’s why he was trapped in Gehenna.”

“A god?” Emrys’s head whips up, his mouth dropping open.

I just look out of the window again. “Or what was once a god,” I murmur.
