Hush

by Avery Collins

His delight floods the bond. Small antlers.

I scoff, not even sure why that feels insulting. Excuse me?

Beautiful small antlers.

I charge him.

He lets me hit him, because of course he does, because the menace knows exactly when I need to feel strong. Our antlers clack together lightly, more play than fight, and the sound rings through the trees. I push. He gives ground with exaggerated effort that I absolutely do not appreciate.

I know you’re faking.

Yes.

Asshole.

Mate.

That word still gets me, even like this.

I stop pushing, suddenly overwhelmed again. Onyx feels the change and carefully lowers his skull to mine. We stand in the trampled moonlit ferns, breathing hard, bodies strange and wild and alive. The ache under my skin is gone. The question is answered. This shape isn’t a monster waiting to eat the human parts of me. It’s another room in the house of myself, one I was scared to open because so much had already been taken and changed without permission.

But this was mine.

My choosing.

Race you home, Wildheart, I send.

His head turns toward me, and the bond flashes with wicked joy. You will lose.

Probably. I crouch, claws digging into damp earth, new body coiling under moonlight with a thrill so bright I almost laugh again. But you’ll chase me.

Onyx lowers himself beside me, huge and beautiful and mine, every old shadow in him lit by the bond we both chose. Always, Little Ember.

I spring forward before he can count, because I’m still Lucas Dawson and cheating at a forest race with my ancient mate feels both reasonable and necessary. Onyx roars behind me, delighted, offended, and already gaining.

The forest was my first love.

I loved it before I knew it had a heart watching me from between the trees. I loved it when it scared me, when it saved me, when it took me apart and gave me back changed. I loved its dark, its mud, its rain, its stubborn silence, its refusal to explain itself just because humans get nervous.

Then the forest gifted me with the man born of it—the monster, the guardian.

The full moon shines over us, the trail opens beneath us, and my happily ever after has claws in the dirt, antlers in the dark, and laughter moving through the bond like a blue lantern finally leading me home.

Onyx

Tonight, I take Lucas on a date.

I use the word carefully because it is human and therefore more complicated than it first appeared.

A date is not only walking together. We do that every day. It is not only food, though Mel explained once that food helps, especially if the other human is nervous and pretending not to be. It is not only looking at each other with wanting. If that were the whole requirement, then most of our life together would count, and Lucas would spend even more time telling me to stop staring at him while he is trying to brush his teeth.

A date, as I understand it now, is an intentional offering of time. A chosen small ritual. A way of saying, I have made space for you inside this brief life and want you to see how carefully I prepared it.

I have prepared this badly, perhaps.

Lucas walks beside me through the trees, suspicious because suspicion is one of his love languages. He wears boots and a jacket, and he has left his radio at the cabin only after looking at it for a long moment and muttering that Sarah would skin him with a stapler if she found out he took ranger business on a date.
