Knot My Fate

by Rosemary A. Johns

Evan: Baby, quit painting. Go lie down in our bed and build a nest. Drink some water. Wrap up in my hoodie. Please.

Beau: Cover yourself with one of my jackets for my scent. I’ll buy blankets and soft nesting cushions as an extra present. Every Omega needs an airport gift.

I attempt to follow Beau’s directions as I lurch to my feet. I’ll drag the bedding into this room and build a nest. Then I’ll wrap myself in both the hoodie and leather jacket, while I wait for them to return home with their goodies.

Paige: Are you bringing me other gifts from Nashville?

Beau: It’s a surprise.

He so is.

Excited, I begin to purr.

New bedding for my nest and souvenirs from the convention, as well as most likely a wild seven days as we spend this heat together, making up for being apart.

This week is looking up.

Paige: Hurry home. I need my boys. Love you.

Beau: We’ll be there soon.

Evan: Prepared to be spoiled when we arrive.

Beau: Love you.

Evan: LOVE YOU MOST.

I lean against the still wet wall, no longer caring that my handprints are being smeared into the paint.

I drag myself toward the door.

Unexpectedly, my phone vibrates with another message.

I frown, glancing at it.

An unusual spike of panic shocks me through the bond.

My stomach swoops.

What’s happened? Isn’t the plane starting the descent now?

Has Evan spilled his soda all over Beau’s leather jacket? That happens frequently enough that I bought Beau an apron for his birthday that read BETA PROOF.

Breathing hard, as I stagger another step toward the door that now feels a marathon distance away from me, I struggle to type out another message.

Paige: What’s wrong?

I stare at the phone.

They are taking too long to answer, aren’t they?

I blink the sweat out of my eyes.

Why aren’t they answering?
