Knot Cursed

There would still be time for a movie. It was the perfect excuse to get our omega to rest.

After the incident with Henrietta growing into a bear-sized chicken, things had calmed down. She, and a few others, were the only ones left. Something I chalked up to the price of magic.

I, however, had used my powers more than once in a few days and nothing catastrophic happened. It was impossible to tell what that meant.

All of us had been more grounded since finding each other and I had a feeling once we bonded fully it would be even better.

We might always be cursed, and I was finding my peace in that. This town was a part of me now and it was where we met. It meant our lives would always be a bit chaotic, but maybe if we kept it under control we could venture outside the boundaries again.

Travel. See the magical world.

I quickly shoved the thoughts away as I pulled on the sweater I’d chosen today. It was a dark burgundy and I paired it with a cute black, gray, and burgundy plaid skirt and black stockings.

With a swipe of black lipstick and some quick makeup, I was ready for another day.

Merrick was coming to work with me today after hitting the library. It had been too long since we’d done curse research and I was more determined than ever to get back to it.

Before I could leave the room I’d claimed at Rook’s, something stopped me. Just a brush of magic against mine.

Beckoning.

It took a second to realize it was the mirror. Again. My heart hammered in my chest as I walked back to see what it would show this time.

The antique mirror was laying face down on the dresser where I left it. I reached for it, then froze. This wasn’t something I should face alone.

“Is anyone here?!” I yelled out. A mixed thundering of footsteps filled the house before all three men stood behind me.

“What’s wrong?” Rook asked.

“The mirror. It’s beckoning me again but if it shows something, I want more eyes on it,” I explained in a rush before finally letting my fingers curl around the metal handle.

It instantly warmed against my skin. Its magic teased mine now that I’d let it be more present.

Then I turned it over. Our faces reflected back before it swirled away, showing an older man sitting on a park bench. He was staring back at us like he could see us standing here, his eyes going wide and face turning white before he clutched his chest.

“Fuck, do we even have a park?” Rook asked, looking at me. I’d lived here the longest and was already moving.

“Yes, it’s like a two minute run from here. Come on,” I said over my shoulder as I burst out of the room and flew down the stairs. They kept pace with me as we ran through town.

If we drew stares along the way I didn’t bother to notice for once. Instead I reached the entrance to Grove Park. It was wide enough to have a playground, a pool for summer, and a large winding path with plenty of nature. That’s where the benches were.

We rushed down the path, eyes peeled for the man we’d seen. This wasn’t something we could simply call authorities about. If we did they’d take my mirror. That thought didn’t settle well with me.

After looping the park twice we never saw him. My heart sank knowing something was going to happen and we couldn’t do anything about it.

“Maybe he’ll show up later? We can take turns checking out the park,” Merrick suggested.

“Yeah,” I said on a sigh. “I need to open up the shop, but if anyone sees that man then call the rest of us.”

“Do we have a group text?” Dorian asked. Rook pulled out his phone and tapped at the screen before all of our phones dinged.

“We do now.”

It didn’t feel right just walking away but we couldn’t spend our entire lives chasing down whatever was going to show on the mirror. We’d go crazy and never get a chance to actually live on our terms.

But something told me that wasn’t the last of the mirror.

“Come on, let’s go open up,” Merrick said as he laced his fingers with mine and pulled me gently toward Main Street.
