“Shouldn't we test it some more? Just to be sure.”

“I believe we require two more kisses to be certain this isn't a fluke.” He bent his head to mine.

Chapter Twelve

“I didn't like the way that man watched you,” Tristan said as we left the museum's parking garage.

I'd been questioned by an attractive detective before I'd been allowed into the lab. He'd escorted me to the cabinet where we kept the reliquary, and I'd told him everything was there even as I felt the empty ledge where the silver piece should have been. It was gone, as we'd expected. When I was done, the Detective had escorted me back to the line of crime scene tape where Tristan was waiting. As far as I knew, no one had looked at me inappropriately.

“Which man?” I asked.

“The Detective. He was too interested in you.”

“Well, I probably won't see him again, so it doesn't matter.”

“I saw him give you his card.”

I laughed. “Are you jealous of some random guy?”

Tristan frowned. “Of course not. This isn't about jealousy. Have you forgotten that Osric is after us and he was smart enough to orchestrate our meeting?”

My smile vanished. “I did, actually.”

“The Detective's interest in you concerned me. I think it may be a good idea to throw his card out the window.”

“Oh, my God!” I scrambled for the card, rolled down the window, and flung the card out. “Do you think it could have been enchanted?”

“Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I'm so sorry to make you anxious, but we have to be very careful now.”

“It's all right. I want to know.”

“Hopefully, the Conclave will help us.”

“Is that where we're going now?”

“Yes, to Great Falls. I've never taken anyone there, especially not a human.”

“Then why are you bringing me?”

“Because they need to know what's happened.” He glanced at me. “Your safety my priority, and I'm hoping after I speak with the Conclave, they'll make it their priority as well.”

Before he could say more, his cellphone buzzed. He pulled it out of his pocket and glanced at it. His expression tightened. “It's Haversham.” He handed me the phone. “Could you read it?”

I took the phone and read, “'Found the seer. Mirana. She's a witch. Meets clients in a warded chapel. Tell Destiny not to touch anything, especially the seer. Sending coordinates now.'”

The phone chimed, and I pulled up the map.

Tristan glanced at it, pulled onto the road, and made a U-turn. “The Conclave is going to have to wait.”

Thirty minutes later, we were walking through an overgrown garden to a stone chapel the size of a cottage, half-hidden by climbing roses and wisteria.

“I've lived in this city for decades,” Tristan murmured. “I've never seen this place.”

“Haversham said it was warded. Does that mean it's hidden by magic?” I asked.

“It could mean many things, but I doubt its hidden since we're looking at it.”

I stuck my tongue out at him.
