I smiled, rubbing my thumb over his bottom lip. “Still, are you sore?”
He flopped back down on me. “Yeah, my ass hurts, but I’m okay.”
“I’m sorry.”
Chris bit me, making me yelp. He said, “Don’t apologize. I wanted it and I sure as hell liked it.”
Rubbing my cheek on the top of his head, I whispered, “I’m glad.” We both fell silent for a few minutes until I commented, “Your birthday is coming up.”
He grunted.
The true contrarian that he was, Chris didn’t like his birthday, his Halloween birthday. He hadn’t wanted to do anything last year, and I’d let it slide. But this year was different. I wanted to do something, even if it was small.
Kissing the top of his head, I asked, “What do you want to do?”
“Nothing.”
“What do you want as a gift?”
“Nothing.”
“So no books and no Halloween Ball the night before?”
Chris glared at me. “Those two things have nothing to do with my birthday.”
I laughed.
“I will accept unrelated books on the day, and of course we’re going to the ball. Last year, I had to drag you. You didn’t even wear a costume or dress up.”
That had been because I hadn’t had anything special to wear. Last year, I’d had no intention of ever attending the ball. This year I was under no illusions. Chris would’ve forced me to go, even if we hadn’t been sort of dating. Besides, last year had turned out a lot more fun than I would’ve thought possible.
“You have something to wear, right?” he asked, looking up at me again.
I kissed his forehead. “Yes.”
“Good, because I’m going to look hot.”
My thoughts raced back to the lace briefs he’d been wearing last night, and my morning wood twitched. I pushed the remembrance away. We didn’t have time for sex, and right now, I was enjoying the simple intimacy of cuddling.
“I’m sure you will,” I told him honestly. Chris looked amazing in anything. Or nothing, my mind unhelpfully supplied as my hands skimmed over his bare skin. Clearing my throat, I asked, “You don’t want to do anything else? We could go to breakfast or take a drive.”
His lips pursed. “A drive would be nice.”
“We could find somewhere to picnic.”
“Fine,” he sighed. “You’ve convinced me.”
Laughing, I rolled on top of him, and Chris wound his arms around my back, smiling up at me. I teased, “Did I? That didn’t seem too hard.”
“What can I say, sweetheart?” He shrugged. “I just like you.”
My heart warmed. “I like you too.”
He arched up and claimed my mouth in a sensual kiss. “Good,” he muttered, “because I don’t think I’m going to let you go.”
Did he mean what I hoped he did?
Before I could ask, the alarm went off and Chris squawked, shoving me off while complaining about missing his morning workout.
