Opinions about me because he had opinions about Badlands.
And if Cash thought Badlands was traffickin' kids—and worse—Colt would think that too. It would be a legitimate reason to create distance.
"Destiny." I say it aggravated now.
She unmutes me. "Sorry. I was askin' Colt if he had time to join us."
"So you're comin'?"
"Of course, I'm comin'. Why wouldn't I come? You're here, aren't ya?"
"Well? Is Colt comin'? Savannah wants to see him. I get it that you guys want your own life. It's fine to move away and build that. But it's not fine for Colt to just walk out on Savannah. She's miserable, Destiny. Absolutely fuckin' miserable. All she wants to do is see him. And you and the baby, obviously. She wants to hug that baby so bad, I can't even explain it. And ya'll just left, ya know? I'm not mad about it. But don't cut us out. Whatever you think I am because of Badlands, it's a lie, OK? It's not true."
She scoffs. "You can't possibly think I'd believe that, can you?"
"So you have heard rumors."
"Yes. But I'm your fuckin' sister, Legion. I told Colt it wasn't true and I meant it."
I let out a breath. "All right then. Can you convince him to come? I mean, I got a glow-up. Doesn't he wanna see me with short hair? Doesn't everyone wanna see me with short hair?"
"You cut your hair!"
"It's gone. Gone, Destiny. Cash is tryin' to make me respectable."
For the first time on this call, I can feel her smile. Then she actually laughs. "You are not wearin' a belt buckle. You are not."
"I'm not," I chuckle back. "It's just a plain belt. Stolen cowboy valor is a crime in these parts."
She laughs again. "Tell me about it. Where's this dinner happenin'?"
"Oh shit, I got no idea. Let me cross this little creek here and ask Savannah."
"Are you guys out at the Ashby place?"
"Yeah. It's nice. Have you been here?"
"No. Colt didn't want no one knowin' where we were. We've got a carriage house about ten miles out of town. Also on the Snake River.”
I find Savannah on the other side of a pine tree. I point to her. "Where we goin' for the food?"
"Destiny's choice," she says.
"Ya hear that?" I ask Destiny. "Your choice."
"OK. How about… Rally's? It's a burger place right there in Moose at the Teton Park entrance? It's still open for another week, but only locals goin' there now. It'll be nice, and quiet, and we can even eat outside if we want."
"Sounds perfect. We'll be there. What time?"
"Give us an hour. See ya then, Legion."
"Bye."
Savannah is already smilin'. "This is amazing. I feel like it's my birthday." She comes towards me, reachin'. Then her hands slip around my hips and she presses herself forward, teasin' me.
Normally I'd take that bait, but I need to tell her about these rumors. Talkin' about business wasn't in the plan for this weekend, but the rumor… it's an issue.
Even if Colt doesn't come—Destiny never did answer my question on the phone—but even if he doesn't, it's enough of an issue that Savannah needs to know about it. It cannot wait.
