My hands were trembling a little when I sat back down. That didn’t stop me from picking up the tablet and settling it on the cushion next to me while I pulled my phone from my pocket.
I needed proof, and I couldn’t risk sending myself screenshots from the tablet because Harrison was most likely on his phone right now and the devices were synced. Which meant there was a chance he’d see the outgoing messages to my number before I could delete them.
I scrolled all the way up and gasped when I realized how far back this went. An entire year
“This is a full-blown affair,” I mumbled, a tear spilling down my cheek.
My husband had been acting strange for the past year. I thought we were just in a lull. His parents were putting more pressure on him, which meant he was home even less than usual. We were drifting apart, and nothing I tried to bring us closer again had worked.
I never expected it was because he was having an affair with a woman more than a decade younger than me.
Calling upon all of my discipline, I took a photograph of the screen, scrolled, and took another. Over and over again until I had every single message they’d sent to each other. Some of the pictures they’d shared were sexual, so I skipped past those. My actions were already in a gray area. I didn’t need to give Harrison and Brie a good reason to sue me for invading their privacy or revenge porn.
Once it was all done, I scrolled through the messages again, pausing on the texts that jumped out to me.
Brie
I can still feel you inside me.
Harrison
Best night of my life.
Another tear dripped down my cheek at his reply. My husband rated time spent with his mistress higher than our wedding night. If that didn’t prove our marriage was truly over, I didn’t know what did.
It took me a moment to see well enough to keep reading.
Harrison
I booked us a suite. Champagne will be waiting.
Brie
I get you for the whole weekend?
Harrison
Yes, she thinks I’m on a work trip.
Brie
Good, you can ignore her calls and blame it on a client.
There were photos she’d sent him from that weekend, showing he’d been in San Francisco, as he’d told me. But that was the only true part. There was no potential high-value client. Just a getaway with his mistress. And I’d been completely clueless.
The message from today showed how recently they’d been together.
Brie
Tell her you have an early meeting. I want you before the vineyard.
We’d driven down separately because Harrison had told me he needed to take care of some business first, and I couldn’t wait until he was available because I had too much dinner prep to do. So while I’d been working hard in the kitchen to make sure the winery’s guests would be impressed by the tasting, he was having sex with Brie.
And he hadn’t even been grateful enough to freaking thank me for impressing the Thorntons after they’d dropped $40,000 on a barrel.
I locked my phone and slipped it back in my pocket. Then I closed the message app and set the tablet on the desk where I found it. Unlocking the door, I carried the crystal snifter into the kitchen to rinse it out before returning it to the cabinet.
The office looked normal, as if my whole world hadn’t just been blown apart. Unfortunately, I couldn’t say the same about my face. My eyes were puffy and my skin pale when I walked out of the office. And my mother-in-law was only ten steps away.
